I was reading the following when the thought struck me, some sins are not held as sin, but what is the criteria that changes it or what makes it blameless?

Matthew 12:5
Or have ye not read in the law, how that on the sabbath days the priests in the temple profane the sabbath, and are blameless?

Doesn't this mean the priests were working on the Sabbath, but that was not sinful because of the point of, the purpose of their labor?

So does purpose comes into account when we sin, such as when the Nazi came looking for Jews and people had to 'lie' to protect them......

The answer is that people are more important then laws, even the laws that are religious in nature. Providing food for the hungry is more important then holding food for ceremonies and assisting people in their worship is more important then a sabbath commandment.

Matt 12:1At that time Jesus went through the grainfields on the Sabbath. His disciples were hungry and began to pick some heads of grain and eat them. 2When the Pharisees saw this, they said to him, "Look! Your disciples are doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath." 3He answered, "Haven't you read what David did when he and his companions were hungry? 4He entered the house of God, and he and his companions ate the consecrated bread—which was not lawful for them to do, but only for the priests. 5Or haven't you read in the Law that on the Sabbath the priests in the temple desecrate the day and yet are innocent? 6I tell you that one[a] greater than the temple is here. 7If you had known what these words mean, 'I desire mercy, not sacrifice,'[b] you would not have condemned the innocent. 8For the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath."

So why did Uzzah get struck down if people are more important than what God sets forth as holy.....

7 They moved the ark of God from Abinadab's house on a new cart, with Uzzah and Ahio guiding it. 8 David and all the Israelites were celebrating with all their might before God, with songs and with harps, lyres, tambourines, cymbals and trumpets.
9 When they came to the threshing floor of Kidon, Uzzah reached out his hand to steady the ark, because the oxen stumbled. 10 The LORD's anger burned against Uzzah, and he struck him down because he had put his hand on the ark. So he died there before God. 1 Chronicles 13:7-10

Some things God does not allow even by a priest...

By saying why you must realize that you don't have the answer so why do you presume to then set forth an answer. It could simply be something about the presence of God on the Ark or it could be that the man died and the writer assumed it was because of God striking him down. Thus using a story to reflect the sacred importance of God against the community that was improperly using the ark.

When you learn to look at things without your certainty which in many cases is not well founded you can see that stories can have far more meaning and yet not portray God as the cruel being that so many people really think He is.

If you look at the Bible through Jesus instead of looking at Jesus through the eyes of the Old Testament your views will become much clearer.

Not at all, I believe there are certain things which God has set forth which are divine or holy and we have to be careful in how we handle or observe them and the Sabbath is one of these.......
