First and foremost, keep in mind that the mahabarat is an Epic. its not a "religious text" as the ones from which you quoted are. Yes it has religion in it But it is on a far lighter-tone than on purely religious texts.

If you want to compare religious texts, then compare with the vedas, the Upanishads and the Bagavat gita(and other Hindu religious texts)

You are comparing apples and oranges.

on the topic of this thread

the mahabarata epic is the longest epic in the world(7 times the size of the Iliad and odyssey combined). its about a battle between good and evil And also about "duty"

and like Hinduism it does not separate the 2 armies into "only good, only bad" force. both sides have good and bad characters while one side fights for righteousness while the other does not

One of the heroes Of Mahabharata is "Karna" a supreme warrior and the elder bro of the 5 "Pandavas"(the 5 brothers who head the righteous side). yet he fights on the side of their opponents; knowing full well that his brothers are the good ones. He does so because it is his "duty" to protect and help his friend Thuriyodhana(who is the villain and the leader of the bad side). Karna could have simply joined his brother's army, and be crowned king, yet he chose certain defeat and death knowingly because he did not want to "desert" a friend at his time of need.

and when Karnan falls dead on the battlefield, everybody weeps, including the opponents armies. because they know that he could have chosen to live, but he stayed on the evil-army because of his "duty". and he was praised by the gods themselves.

the morale of the story is that there are several levels of "duty". and one must do his duty regardless of the results.

It is these kind of tragic yet thought-provoking characters that make the Mahabarat a truly great Hindu Epic.

Brother, I have no idea what you are talking about. Can you please explain your reasoning of these statements?

what i meant was that the quotes of urs were taken from strictly "religious" texts whereas Mahabarat is not a "religious" book per se. it has Hinduism in it but it is not a religious text.

so obviously the number of profound quotes will be few and far between in any such semi-religious text than it would be in religious texts

Oh I see brother, but there is a misunderstanding. Actually what happened was a Christian member had said Hinduism is an evil religion, so my argument was that Hinduism has been a peaceful religion, and I provided those biblical verses proving the bible has had it's share in violence and bloodshed. I was not comparing biblical verses to the same context of the Mahabarat.
