  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

We talk about needing to find happiness within yourself and with yourself. Can you recognize in yourself what makes you really happy? Not superficial happy...but smile for no reason...at peace with the world happy.

Watching a beautiful sunset at the end of the day. That was one of the reasons why I moved to Hawaii. A beautiful sunrise affects me the same way. As I approach each new day with optomism. Of course not every day will wind up being a good day. Also, while looking down on the clouds while flying, I feel such peace,as I am above, and escaping, all of the heartaches, and problems, that are on this earth. :)

1. When I accomplish something difficult it makes me happy, especially if I learn something new.

2. When I notice that a character issue I used to struggle with has not been much of an issue lately. And it has to be something someone points out to me or something I noticed without looking for. For example, I was recently helping someone with a project and there were technical problems. I found the problems a little annoying but I joked about it to the co-worker as I was fixing things. The co-worker exclaimed, "You are so patient!" and it occurred to me that I was patient and I was not always like that. Ten years ago I would have been grumbling about the problems. Instead, I had a pleasant enough time chatting with the co-worker as I was fixing the problem. So I actually had a calming effect on people rather than joining in the complaining and adding to the tension. I thought, "wow, what has happened to me (in a good way).

3. When I go to a concert and I hear something new in music I thought I was familiar with.

4. When I take walks at night and look at the stars and think about how vast the universe is.

5. When I look at my old coins I like to imagine where in the world they might have been.

6. When I get to do something creative (I used to work as an artist).

7. Quiet time in general makes me happy.

8. When I stumble upon some novelty. For example I was out of town on a business trip and I was walking about town in my free time in the evening. I happened upon a midieval fair. So I enjoyed that for an hour or so. My life has very few fun, spontaneous times like that.

9. At church on Sunday toward the end of the service the congregation recites the Lord's Prayer. In my mind I mark that moment as the end of the old week and the beginning of the new week, and that gives me peace whatever is going on in my life.

10. I sometimes think about people who meant a lot to me when I was a child who have gone on. Sometimes I feel a connectedness to them even though I have not seen them for many years.

11. It is morning. It is raining. I don't have to go to work. I am sitting in my library, reading and drinking hot tea while I hear rain against the window and thunder in the distance. That is close to perfection.

I guess happiness is when I've been able to be a friend to someone. Just hope its made their day a little easier.

Dancing, walking/hiking, movement. There is something about moving and feeling in my soul that brings happiness. The last 3 months I've been thinking a lot about how our body, spirit and soul feel the other parts moving, changing our breath. There is something in being self conscious about each part of our being and what's going on there is I find meaningful. Tho its just a step in knowing my whole being more.

But the things that has blesses me so much is God's guidance the last few years. There have been times when I've been almost giddy from it.

I am happy when I have helped someone else. So nursing feeds my soul even when it also drains my mental and physical capacity.

This week, two very small acts for a patient made an incredible difference in his life while he was staying in the hospital. I found him a book to help fill his time...and because I have access to his records, I was able to verify that the staff had followed through on notifying someone that he would be missing a very important appointment. The amount of relief he felt was visible. I found myself smiling all the way home.

I went to church, someone got baptized so that was good. I went to my favorite park/trail. I am pausing at about the 4th mile of a 6 mile walk along the trail. My phone is streaming some nice music. When I get back to my car I am going to a bookstore. A nice day.

The one thing we have to be careful about is finding most of our happiness from external sources. Even things like rainbows and sunsets can be a little iffy because they are out of our control...would sudden blindness mean that you could no longer be "happy"?...or a week long streak of bad weather knock a person off kilter? (thought there is some biology related to long streaks without sunshine).

I think it is important to always keep in our minds that which really makes us happy to remember when external forces try to steal our joy or send us into periods of "personal pity parties". (I know I'm guilty too.) I think that to some degree, happiness is more of a choice than anything else.

For me it is a grey area what is internal and what is external. Like today, I went to church and heard God's Word. Is it external (God speaking to me) is it internal (my hearing of it). I took a long walk because it was a nice day. Is that external (nice weather)? Is it internal (if I were a different sort of man, I could have been sitting at home watching trashy movies or tv shows instead of doing something healthy). A lot of what we do externally reflects what is going on internally. And external things I seek will either help me grow or will harm me.

I can be happy on a rainy day,and on a Monday. But a rainy Monday would dampen my spirit just a little bit. Just as Karen Carpenter used to sing:

Talkin' to myself and feelin' old
Sometimes I'd like to quit
Nothing ever seems to fit
Hangin' around nothing to do but frown
Rainy days and Mondays always get me down
What I've got they used to call the blues
Nothin' is really wrong
Feelin' like I don't belong ( see Romans 12:2 )
Walkin' around some kind of lonely clown
Rainy days and Mondays always get me down

Sometimes just seeing God's beauty in the sunset or sunrise or the mountains and I just pause and say "Thank you God, for showing me your beauty!" That makes me smile.

I am also happier if I get my "chores" done as opposed to being a lazy couch potato. When I accomplish alot, even though it's just housework or yardwork I feel happier. I also feel happy at work, like this week I was dreading doing W-2's and taxes for the business. BUT I DID do it, and it went smoother than I thought and now it is DONE! So I am "happy" about that.

Dh, help me understand better about what you wrote in the 2nd paragraph. I'm a bit slow. :D
