What Makes One A False Teacher???

Biblically, what makes one a false teacher? If one obviously is teaching (preaching, instructing, advising or simply directing another) something that is so blantantly opposed to scripture it is clearly false teaching that is one thing. But what about one who isn't teaching as the Word says we are to? What about the one who negates what scripture says concerning our conduct when dealing with people?

I am not out to get anyone with this thread, especially anyone who I may have disagreed with concerning things mentioned above. My intentions of this thread are to seek the truth to whether or not what I believe to be true within the scriptures is in all actuallity false and I need to change.

Thanks for the input and please pray for me if I am in error.

I would say if one isnt preaching the way the word says, to pray for him/her. Maybe the person is still young and immature in the Lord. It doesnt mean he/she is a false teacher.
There are all sorts of Preachers/Pastors/Evangelists--some preach hard, some dont. I know i fall into the Hard category at times, by that I mean sometimes people can think im out to intentionally hurt his/her feelings, but actually im not.
Proverbs 28:23 says "He that rebuketh a man shall afterwards find more favour than he that flattereth with the tongue."
Thats one of the verses God showed me, when i was praying about rather or not God wanted me to continue preaching against sin.
I would also say if this thread was purposely started to prove someone wrong, that repentance may be necessary. I dont say that in a bad way, but i see that you mentioned it wasnt started cause of someone else.
God Bless,
Joe

IMO, the false teacher is one who is not a believer. The Bible calls them WOLVES in sheep's clothing. ie they are not sheep, which the Bible distinguishes as believers.

Hence, I cannot understnd why Christians attack other Christians and label them as false prophets/teachers, when the ones they are attacking preach Jesus as Lord and Saviour too (eg the Copelands, Hagin, Hinn). They are simply biting and injuring their own body of Christ.

If one disagrees with doctrines (and we all disagree here and there, even within the same denoms) then simply say you disagree and acknowlege that you are not perfect in your doctrine either, but there's really no need to play self-appointed church policeman and label every other Christian you disagree with a false teacher.

Very true Andrew. I may misunderstand you here. Are you saying Copeland, Hagin, Hinn are false teachers or just saying they are Christians that are attacked?
I go with Christians that are attacked.

Yes, Joe

I am saying that they ARE Christians -- they confess and preach Jesus as Lord and Saviour, yet they are so vehemently attacked by fellow Christians and labelled as fasle teachers just becos they disagree with some doctrines.

I always view false teachers as those of Christian cults, or of those who dont believe or teach that Jesus is Lord.

I believe this. I have been victimised by this as well. Its sad when your own brothers and sisters are your worst enemies. I've heard it said that the church is the only "army" that shoots its own wounded. we need to pray for those doing the attacking to have discernment. None shall be perfected until we are face to face with Christ. All will have works that stand the fire: gold, silver & precious stones, and all will have some works that are burned up as wood, hay, and stubble....

I think there are a couple of types whom can be termed as false teachers. Those who set out as wolves with the full intention to waylay and to misled with dark and vindictive intentions. These are the definitive false teachers.
Then there are those who teach with lack of scriptural study and spiritural maturity. Who twist the Word to suit their message and their personal purporses with no fear of God; and refuse wise rebuke. These false teachers might not be vicious in nature but can be just as dangerous to the naive.
Well at least thats my take on it.

I read somewhere (and you can correct me if it is wrong) that Benny Hinn prophesied (that God revealed to him) that Fidel Castro would die by the end of the 1990's and also claimed that God would wipe out homosexuals by 1995. I also read where Mr. Copeland predicted that within months of 9/11 that over one billion muslims would convert to Christianity.

So IF these are true and accurate (that these teachers/pastors/prophets said these things) and they did not materialize, does that make them false prophets?

You all can correct me if I'm wrong, I did get that from a second hand source. I did however think it was interesting in relating to this thread.

2 Peter 2:1But there were also false prophets among the people, even as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Lord who bought them, and bring on themselves swift destruction. 2And many will follow their destructive ways, because of whom the way of truth will be blasphemed. 3By covetousness they will exploit you with deceptive words; for a long time their judgment has not been idle, and their destruction does not slumber.

Havent' seen it raised here, so I'll raise it personally.

I've taught stuff years ago that I know longer believe or teach today. Yet at the time I believed and taught it sincerely as the truth. Issues/doctrines on praise and worship, secularism, eschatology, etc.

I doubt very much that makes me a false teacher. Anyone's comments?

Been there ~ Done that!
Depends on how much the teaching had negative influence on others I think. Doctrines on baptisms & different timing on when the rapture is, or Calvanism verses Armenianism, I don't think those cause too much harm, and are not robbing ones salvation. (Though if we argue TOO much we are contentious, then THAT becomes a problem.)
I think it can enter the realm of false teacher when it involves money, and a preacher uses his or her gifts to fleece a flock, so to speak. "Filthy Lucre" Paul called it, and its pretty well denounced in scripture....

I know people who were so turned off by money preachers, as well as very strict legalistic teachers that they left the church and went back out into the world. Now THOSE preachers/teachers have to account for their errors...

There is only one altar that matter's and it not in the front of any chruch! It is in Heaven. And the BLOOD OF OUR LORD JESUS WAS PLACE THERE. So I will not say to anyone you are wrong because you do not believe as I believe. In less the Holy Spirit open the eyes of anyone the vail will allways be there. Only the Most High God can point the finger at anyone. (see the written on the wall)

Bible says you can tell false teachers by their fruit. If their character and lifestyle is a concern and they don't seem to be concerned, their teaching might be off track too. Just my own thing but I would add humility to the kindness, gentleness, self-control etc list.

If someone is humble they're willing to hear what God has to say, whether thats correction or whatever.
Hmm speaking to myself here, I'm not a teacher but oh dear, my own character and fruit count need checking yet again!
see ya :)
