• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

:groupray: Before I embark on this journey of not smoking I'd like to read what some others have done and experienced. Would you be willing to tell me your story?

How long did you smoke before quitting?
How many times did you try to quit before this time?
Did you have a plan?
Did you have a spouse who smoked, too?
Did you have close support people?
Did you ask the prayer-gifted people you knew to pray for you?
What were your traps? How did you deal with them?
How long have you been cigarette free?

Thanks in advance. Hearing your stories will give me additional hope.

Off & on for 15 years
can't count the times I tried to quit
This time my plan was to use the commit losenges and be off of them in 3 months but it hs been 4 months and I have not smoked at all but am still on the losenges--looking for a plan to quit those without smoking-btw
I do have a spouse who still smokes but we never have smoked in the house so that helps but that is another reason I usually start back
I have close support people in "other" recovery programs but not really with smoking--is why I like this thread for us
I didn't specifically ask prayer-gifted people to pray for my not smoking but I think that's not a bad idea--and IMO maybe even the not so prayer gifted people could pray--:)
My traps are weight gain, cravings for alcohol & drugs seem to come back when I quit, my husband & son smoke. Before I have always gone back but this time the difference is the commit losenges. I haven't even wanted to smoke really and it's really cool because I can get my "fix" anywhere--church, work, any non-smoking place. I'm personally seeking help on how to get off of them without going back to smoking or worse
This time I have been cigarette free for 4 months & 1 week

Thanks for asking the questions and I wish you all the best. I do think eating right and exercise helps as well Keep us posted on your efforts

How long did you smoke before quitting? Started smoking in 1976

How many times did you try to quit before this time? Once in 1984 for 3 months, cold turkey. I wasn't really ready to stop and felt very pressured into it by other people.

April 2004 for 9 months, because I got bronchitis and it scared me silly - again I wasn't really ready to stop, but I did using Nicorette Inhalators, then last Christmas (2004) I started again, but I necer went back to 20+ a day, this time I rarely smoked more than 10 in a day (rolled my own).

Gave up last Tuesday, really wanted/needed to stop. Using Nicorette Inhalators at home and gum at college - don't care what it takes so long as I don't smoke. NRT really works for me and I feel very positive about this quit.

Did you have a plan? Continue with NRT and stop it when I'm ready (it naturally tails of - I found I was only using 1 inhalator a day last time after 6 months, so wasn't really getting a hit as such...more of a comfort thing really - again not worried about that aspect - much better than smoking)

Did you have a spouse who smoked, too? I did but I am now single, but my 18 year old smokes, but not in the house (smoke free house for the last 3 years)

Did you have close support people? My mum, who gave up 3 years ago after 43 yrs smoking is great, but I depend on my online fellow quitters more than anything, and God of course.

Did you ask the prayer-gifted people you knew to pray for you? Yes, again forum friends are praying me through this and encouraging me (as you are too - thanks!)

What were your traps? How did you deal with them? Social situations - try to avoid those situations in the early weeks.

How long have you been cigarette free? Since last Tuesday night - so 4 days (into my 5th day)
