  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What little thing of life, detail perhaps, really turns you on?

I think most of us who have a passion for something end up with a number of passions most likely with some aspect we may be unaware of linking them all together.

The significance of this to Mature Singles is that if two people share the same or similar passions that could make time together a lot more enjoyable

Well for one thing I'm a bit concerned that nobody seems to decorate anything any more.

For the first manned flight the hot air balloon was magnificently decorated.

Two centuries earlier the ship the Golden Hind was adequately decorated.

By 1900 the decorations were getting a bit perfunctory, but the overall appearance had enough complexity to be beautiful but not so much as to look messy. I've attached a picture of the USS Brooklyn (CA-3) as an example.

The passion? Well I woke up thinking about the beauty of the decorations on the bows of pre Dreadnought ships (some people think I must have dropped in from a different planet).

So writing this thread I came to realise there are a lot of things I find beautiful, and they are complex but not messy.

Here are some very different ones

Passion...a loaded word. I'm afraid my passion is far from decorating. Most of my life I've been fascinating on how people tick. As an adult I've spent my greatest mental energy on how the human man/woman minds think. From that has come an interest in neurology and behavioral psychology.

I've had a passion to experience life thru spending time with people, especially my Gfs.
I've had a passion to see the world. So I've traveled and hiked.
I've had a passion to know how things work, so I've learned to repair/remodel all systems in my home.
I've had a passion for money, so I've learned to invest and rent property so that I have multiple sources of income.

I'm visiting a person in FL in a few weeks and she was asking what I want to see while there. I said you know me and you know the area, so just pick out something to see and we will have a great time. To which she replied, "You have so many interests!"

Not sure I can call this a passion, but I love tinkering mechanical things. If I have not been an IT manager, I would have been an auto mechanics. I hope one day after I retire in couple years, to own a genuine made in Germany VW beetles (preferably 1969-1970 and stick shift of course), have a mentor to teach me to rebuild engine, fix the body and make it road worthy and beautiful. Love the sound of the VW beetles. I and my ex own one before 1970 model. So much good memory with that car. It just rusted away.

Other things I like are biking, fishing, building military models/airplanes, Radio control cars, and enjoy my 2 red slider turtles (75 gallon tank with several guppies).

I like to travel to places I use to go while as engineer for the arm services. Okinawa for one, just to walk the places so many years ago when I was young.

I had an infatuation for about a month with this engine:

Two are fitted to a locomotive such as the one that pulled the Flying Scotsman

The first engine starts up at 0:58 and the second at 1:56, at 2m48s the camera holder goes off and looks at other stuff.

Only 22 deltic locomotives were built, but with 30% more power and 10% lighter than the other diesel electrics they were ideally suited to fast passenger trains. There were also 'baby deltics' and deltic engines on fast patrol boats and for an entirely different reason, on mine sweepers because the short crankshafts didn't have a big magnetic dipole moment that could set off mines

It's probably my age and the hurts I've endured through the years but I feel little passion. Sometimes I forget to eat. I long for a "call" from the Lord but wonder if He sees me as "spent". It's sad,I like to pick up a cause, climb that mountain but He doesn't seem interested in me.

I really, really would like to leave this planet earth but I care about my 2 sons so keep plodding on.

Be patient. Getting over the end of a long relationship takes time, months or years. Being keen to get something done, to 'climb that mountain' all depends on having an undivided focus, and that is what at present you can't have, so you will lack direction for a time. It will get better. Maintain your health and any relationships you have for the time when your enthusiasm returns.

One way to get perspective is to imagine yourself ten years in the future, and look back at the present and ask what your priorities should be. My guess is the time to recover will then be put in perspective but at the same time you should be moving ahead gently as well. One possibility might be to watch some TEDx or TED talks as they are world class and up to date and really very useful on whatever topic they are on. Also a vital addition to the fairly small amount medical training used to contain on the mind, is the website sfhelp by Dr. Pete Gerlach who goes far beyond what most people know on the topic.

all the best, M

Thanks Dayhiker for concern and others to my plight. I apologize to everyone to regurgitate my words of death. I feel so removed from others,so hollow, and such a coward to not finally end it. It does feel like being dead yet my body remains here.

Passion would be good. How can a dead man feel the passion to take steps to gain passion? All the things in life that SO excite others I observe while walking by....perhaps there is a resurrection that spans heaven and earth to help those caught in between.

Well, I do believe in resurrection, iambren.

One thing I heard in your last post was something like when your body, soul and spirit has a desire you are not hearing it, or you ignore it or blow it off in some way. Some refer to this as being closed which I think you have said comes from all the pain you have felt and in many ways you feel you didn't cause it so there is an injustice you feel.

I'd suggest you find a somatic therapist. I think at this point it would be good to start with physical things, walking, hiking, a bike ride, exercise class, yoga, swim, sun bath. God created our body and said it was very good just like our non physical parts. In looking for something for your body to do the desire is to get out of your head and just feel your body functioning. I feel many of us Christians have neglected our body. Just be on the lookout for something physical to do. When you feel a desire go do it, feel it and also feel you spirit move with in your body.

a thought I had.

Sorry to interrupt, but most people would describe what you have as depression. I would be confident in saying it is depression caused by grief, as indicated by the need to repeat things. Whenever there is something a person can not understand as it is they will go back to it adding something taking something away to work out exactly what the key factors actually are.

To an outsider that looks like repetition and unfortunately they soon tire of it. It isn't actually repetition but trying different combinations.

There is also a physical feedback that with no direction your body lapses into a low energy state as it would in a temperate climate for most of the winter. The key to pulling out of that is in the name 'dayhiker'. Go out for a walk at mid day. And do think about the things you wished you knew because some of those things you may be able to learn without too much concentration. All the best, good bye.

That is a great advise. There are times in life 9and still is) I thought life is a real drag, not worth living. I fight hard tolet such negativity to control my life. I bike and just walk for miles (city walking, more to see) and when I am exhanusted physically, I feel so much better. Help others by volunteering. We appreciate what we have when we see what other people do not have. Talking on forum is good as we as Chrsitians need to cover each other's back like a platoon in the battle. Literally we are in the spirtual battle everyday. let us pray for each other in this forum.

Iambren, best wishes for you counselor session. Let us know how it goes. I too went to couple session before. Hard to passion when one feels empty. For me aging and health issues are bad combination. Do feel like life is a limbo sometimes. God gives us a role to play in His big production call "earthly life". Will be good if He can ask us if we want to be part of this production. Like it or not, you are born into this world and there is no exit to the stage. After years of just solider on to serve the church and ministries. I do not feel any sense of accomplishment just bitter disappointment. Matthew 6:33 does not apply to me. As far as I know God loves glory and we are created to glorify Him. Pastor Rick Warren said it well in his " Purpose Driven Life". It is not about us it is all about Him !

So I guess the saying go, if life is a lemon, make some lemonade out of it. There is really no exit strategy.
