Then some of the Pharisees and teachers of the law said to him, “Teacher, we want to see a sign from you.” He answered, “A wicked and adulterous generation asks for a sign! But none will be given it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
Is it purely & simply the resurrection of Jesus after 3 days?
If so, how was that a sign given to the unbelieving generation since Jesus only appeared to believers!
First the Scripture in question (Matthew 12:38-40)
Yes as it was given for them to look at, the symbolism given through Jonah is equivalent.
No he appeared to all in the area, believers and not. Jesus used this reference because he was speaking to the Jewish people, who would know what this is. The Scripture goes on to reference the men of Nineveh and the Queen of the South (1 Kings 10:1-13) because they are non-Jewish people that found proper belief and repentance with people "lesser" than the Son of God Himself. How much more so rejecting the Son of God Himself when He was standing there before them!
In the end, the Jewish people were shown more through God's revealed revelation and through His miracles over several hundred years. They were shown God's nature through numerous other things, and even shown the Son of God Himself, yet they still were not believers upon Him.
No he appeared to all in the area, believers and not.
But they would have known that Jonah appeared to the people of Nineveh after the time in the fish, it was not symbolism, it was a real, living, speaking sign that converted thousands!Jesus used this reference because he was speaking to the Jewish people, who would know what this is.
The Scripture goes on to reference the men of Nineveh ...
But Jesus says that they shall be given a sign in the future, a real sign. How much more so rejecting the Son of God Himself when He was standing there before them!
I must have missed that information... can you point to the verse that shows this please?
But they would have known that Jonah appeared to the people of Nineveh after the time in the fish, it was not symbolism, it was a real, living, speaking sign that converted thousands!
But Jesus says that they shall be given a sign in the future, a real sign.
If you get a parking ticket and there is no sign displayed you have every right to complain and the law will vindicate you.
So you think that the sign of the prophet Jonah was Jesus appearing before his death!?The verse AS WRITTEN expressly states that He is addressing the "Pharisees and the teachers of the law". There is no verse that specifically says "Jesus appeared to believers and non-believers". To think that Jesus only did anything with those that would accept Him is ludicrous on the face of it. His purpose was to present Himself and people made the choices of whether to believe or not believe. ...
Re-read the Scripture. He says they will NOT receive signs and wonders in the future and even states that those who expect them are wicked! He goes on to say that they were GIVEN (not future, not present, PAST) the sign in the person of Jonah.
It would have taken him 40 days to get from the Eastern Med to Nineveh, so his preaching coincides with Pentecost - God does not give ineffective signs! Also interesting is that Jonah spent 3 days in the big fish and then spent fotrty days preaching in Nineveh, and they repented... Whereas Jesus spent 3 days in the tomb and then forty days in Jerusalem, before being taken up, and yet some did not believe....
It would have taken him 40 days to get from the Eastern Med to Nineveh, so his preaching coincides with Pentecost - God does not give ineffective signs!
Jonah 3-4So Jonah arose and went to Nineveh according to the word of the LORD. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly great city, a three days' walk. Then Jonah began to go through the city one day's walk; and he cried out and said, "Yet forty days and Nineveh will be overthrown."It would have taken him 40 days to get from the Eastern Med to Nineveh, so his preaching coincides with Pentecost - God does not give ineffective signs!
