It's only controversial because people want to make the Bible in their own image rather than letting the Bible conform them to the likeness of our God. They don't want to believe, so they make the Bible a faithless book.
Sorry, it's a rough time of the year for me, and I tend to say what I really see a lot more.
A friend of mine recently said that she'd like to see me with a low verbal filter sometime. I told her she really wouldn't.

In 1 Corinthians 13 Paul tells us of the perfect thing to come. What is it? And it says, then I shall know as fully as I am known. Prophecy will cease....

The key to understand what the perfect thing means is the last verse of that chapter.

After those gifts ceased when that "perfect thing" comes, all we have remaining will be faith hope and charity.

So why does one still need to have hope or faith when that perfect thing comes (Romans 8:24)?

Rather Paul says but back to now, while we wait for the perfect thing to come, abides, faith, hope and love.

Rather Paul says but back to now, while we wait for the perfect thing to come, abides, faith, hope and love.

But if you read the verses preceding that conclusion, when that perfect is come, tongues, word of knowledge and prophecy will cease, but faith hope and charity never fail/cease/vanish.

Otherwise, these verses will not make much sense.

8 Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away." will not make sense.

9 For we know in part, and we prophesy in part.

10 But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away.

We will always need to love God, before and after we see Him. Identify Him by faith and hope that He will enrich us spiritually when He comes.

When He is present, we don't need knowledge and prophecy, the gifts.

The correct term is charity rather than love.

But when he is present with us, and we have our redeemed bodies, and know everything, why would we still need faith and hope for (Romans 8:24)?

The perfect in 1 Cor.13:10 is explained in v11. Humans grow from childhood to adulthood. Paul used that to refer to spiritual growth that is essential in Christians.
Paul said in 1Cor. 14:20 that in our thinking we are to be mature. Perfect is what Christians are supposed to become. When we all reach adulthood or spiritual maturity then the partial or imperfect or immature is in the past... thereby we will know fully as we are fully known of God.

With Knowing fully it follows that tongues, and prophecy, and knowledge will function fully by and through God's love in practice and therefore not cease for as long as the BOC needs all of the gifts given by God in order to grow and attain unity. (Eph.4:12-13; 1 Cor.1:5-10) Therefore is the reason why Paul said Earnestly desire to prophesy and not forbid to speak in tongues. (1 Cor.14:39-40).

1 Cor.13:13 Faith and hope and love abides forever.

New Heaven & Earth. Jesus returning?
I would say Jesus' return comes before the new Earth.
There is the thousand years reign, if we pass away before Jesus returns, we come with Him, with tens of thousands of saints.

There may be things in Heaven to have faith for. Those on Earth when Christ comes again, will not have new bodies, and this begins the thousand years reign.

My view is the perfect thing to come is the Christ and the peoples of Earth, on Earth will see immense light from God and will begin to grow repentant and spiritual. The perfect is something that replaces prophecy, healing, tongues, wisdom and knowledge...

Only God is perfect.

There will be no need for prophecy when everyone can see and speak to God directly.

Paul will fully know because when he sees God, he will become as He is.

The light that will come from the face of Jesus, the glory and His breath, will cover the whole Earth when He comes. Otherwise, once again, He could only have a group of twelve. But everyone will be on their knees. I believe to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord, and Paul is with Him now. The perfect thing to come, comes to the Earth from Heaven.

We know Paul is not referring to them, since he is teaching the Body of Christ in 1 Cor, who will all be in heaven during that 1000 year reign (1 Cor 15:51-52)
