What is the Gospel?

From Augsburg Confession, Article IV

Also they teach that people cannot be justified before God by their own strength, merits, or works, but are freely justified for Christ's sake, through faith, when they believe that they are received into favor, and that their sins are forgiven for Christ's sake, who, by His death, has made satisfaction for our sins. This faith God imputes for righteousness in His sight. Rom. 3 and 4.

Isaiah 52:7&10

How beautiful upon the mountain are the feet of him
that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace;
that bringeth good tidings of good, that publisheth salvation.

The Gospel is the good news about what God has done through Jesus Christ for our salvation. The Gospel is NOT anything about us, what we say, do or think. The Gospel is the power of God for salvation.

The Gospel produces within us faith, love, good works for our neighbors, but these are all responses to God's work within us, characteristics of those whom God is saving, and have no bearing on our status before God.
