Since the GFC. I think since some Immigrants contribute to the economy some will buy homes and a lot rent which drives up rental prices. I see corporations building homes just to rent out. I believe it's extremist talk that both parties use to persuade voters but immigrants do contribute.

Australia’s housing shortage is driven by several factors, including:

Demand for housing, including rental properties, has skyrocketed in recent times. Unfortunately, the rate of building approvals and commencements is down sharply. This combination is affecting the Australian property market and causing a housing and rental crisis in Australia.

The housing crisis in Australia has been further exacerbated by events such as:

• The Global Financial Crisis
• The mining boom
• Increased immigration
• The Covid-19 pandemic

I know that rents have rocketed over the last few years. Due to volunteering with the Saint Vincent de Paul Society, I see people on pensions or other low incomes who are struggling with rent increases being one of the biggest problems in recent times.

I don't live in a wealthy suburb. About 3 years ago rents were about $350 to $380 a week in our area. Now they are in the $500 to $600 a week bracket, and they can be very much higher in "better" suburbs.

Here there are houses for sale and rent. Apartments for sale and rent. Even abandoned houses here and there.

We also have a swelling population of homeless as well as many working poor that struggle to make ends meet.

Just on local conditions it seems that the cost of most available places is greater than what most of the people who need a place can afford.

Where I live there isn't really a shortage of housing. There is plenty available. It is just priced higher than those who need/want it can afford.
