What is the Anglican Breviary?

The Anglican Breviary is the old Roman Breviary refracted through the BCP (Coverdale Psalter, KJV Scripture, BCP Collects).
The Monastic Diurnal is a book with just the day hours (no Matins) from the Monastic (Benedictine) Breviary.

Thank you for some clarification. I google image'd the Breviary, and it's huge! It's bigger than any Bible I've seen!

The Monastic Diurnal is tempting to have, but I know that I wouldn't have time to do all the Hours!

The Anglican Breviary is also about the most complex breviary available and many people find that it is too much work to actually use prayerfully. BUT, if you are used to doing that kind of office, it really is beautiful.

Which Diurnal are you looking at? Lancelot Andrewes Press (refracted through the BCP) has one and so does St. Michael's Abbey (a Roman Catholic Latin-English edition). Yes, there are a lot of hours, but none of them take very long.

Okay, you found me... I was staring at the Lancelot Andrewes Press one. However, I thought to myself to decide later. Besides that Diurnal, I have also been thinking about St. Augustine's Prayer Book... but I suppose it would be better altogether to replace my Canadian BCP which is starting to fall apart!

Plus, that Press seems to make really beautiful books!

My point is to look into more specifically Anglo-Catholic literature and devotions. I have been reading Tracts for the Times (not that I understand it all!) to help me going.

The Liturgy of the Hours was always complicated to me, so the Diurnal would be a good introduction to it in the future. I am just not sure about carrying it around on the buses in case I might offend someone, but I suppose as long as I pray the Office to myself in silence, things should be fine!

The St. Augustine Prayer book is nice (that was my grandmother's go-to devotional), but it is a devotional rather than daily office book. Another place to look is Benedictine Daily Prayer: A Short Breviary. It is Catholic, but has options in a few places for Lutherans and Anglicans. Plus, in case it matters to you, it is in modern English and is much simpler than the options previously mentioned.

Oh, I know that St. Augustine Prayer Book is not an office book, but a book of private devotions, but I still want one! :D

Thank you for the suggestion. I will look it up, and perhaps look into it! It may help me with appreciating the Divine Office more. Even after a year of on-and-off recitation, it is still very new to me!

I have an Anglican Breviary. I find it too complicated to say any of the offices except compline. Plus the language is rather bulky.

Personally, when I feel the need to say the offices, I use an iPhone app called Laudate. It has the hours, bible, devotions, Vatican II documents, etc.

Thank you for your response!

I suppose I should get a new phone... I'm just not into apps as I am into books!
