My DH and I have adopted 2 boys-domestic, agency. 4 years ago our agency was charging on a sliding scale...11k-18k. Now they are flat fee 20k. I know of another agency charging 11k for domestic. Korea is about 23k, guatamala is 30k.

You really just need to shop around and find an agency you can afford and work with.

We are going to try foster/adopt sometime next year. That is free of charge through our state (IA) and you even get a stipend to help with expences.

Oh! Don't forget about the $10k tax credit you can take over 5 years on all expenses incurred with any adoption. That is a huge blessing. Congress is considering raising this credit to 15k.

We used the equity in our house to finance the initial expence. If God has placed this desire in your heart then HE will provide! Trust me-we are not *rich*, and things just seemed to come together... Most agancies do not want all the money up front-be wary of any that would. You usually pay certain fees along the way and the big chunk of it at placement of a child. You could hold fundraisers (garage sales, dinners, second job, etc) to raise the money, too. Or you could go with a state adoption...

Yes, Adoption can be very expensive but I felt layed apon to say this. If God wants you to adopt,it does not matter in the least how poor you are. God provides. I have seen it done over and over again. I see ppl that struggle with finances, but God being the wonderful God he is provides that money to adopt. I could give you story after story of when this happen. Not to mention there are tons of scholarships for ppl who really want to do this and have been checked out. I knew of a little girl whos mother wanted to adopt and she sold home made braclets online and within 6 months had the money to help her mom. I wish I could share the hundreds of testimonies I have heard with this. I hope this helps.

We are witnesses to this. God called us to adopt (after having 4 bio kids). We just sent our paperwork to China yesterday. We should have our daughter home by jan/feb.

We started off in July with NO money for this. It costs about $18K. If God wants you to do this-He makes a way. We now have all the money!

Remember, the IRS gives an adoption tax credit of $10K.

Then there are grants, etc. Steven Curtis Chapmans website: www.shaohannahshope.org and www.chinacare.org

Our daughter is in one of the better orphanages. She is 2 and shares a crib with another child. There are 30 kids in each room with only 3 women to take care of them. The bottom of the crib is a piece of plywood and they sleep on that with a towel.

Most daughters are abandoned due to the one child policy or poverty. 70% of girls in China's orphanages will never be adopted. They usually end up as prostitues and being abused.

If God is calling you to do this-Obey Him and He will honor your obedience.

Praise God!

Amen, we were told initially that we would never have children. during that time, God really laid on our hearts to adopt. I am 24 weeks pregnant, but we still have EVERY intention of adopting and we know that God will make a way, otherwise he wouldn't have laid it so heavily on both our hearts.

Don't forget about the possibility of adopting through your state child protective services agency! It's harder to get a newborn, but there are so many toddlers and kids in need of adoption, and there are virtually no fees.

Adopting from overseas is a great cause, and I don't mean to discourage it at all, but there are lots of kids in our own backyards who need great families, too.

Honeywife congratulations on your adoption. If you don't mind sharing where did you adopt from? I'm also curious if you wouldn't mind sharing the agency you used (PM me privately if you prefer to share or not share I understand).

Some countries don't allow pre-selection but, some agencies still use photo selecting even though its illegal :o

My hubby and I also feel that God might be leading us towards adoption someday. My husband was adopted from the US and would love to turn around and adopt a child of his own. Ironically, we are now pregnant, but there is still a lot of room in our lives for adoption! We're just waiting to see how it all unravels!

We are in the process of adopting from an orphanage in Mexico. We are almost finished (it has been approx. 1 year) and so far have only spent $3,500. Mexico does not like to release their children to Americans but when they do, there is little cost involved on the Mexican side. We did not have to go through an agency except for them to do our homestudy. The majority of the money we have invested has gone to the good ole U.S. government!

I whole-heartedly agree with the others...if God has laid it on your heart to adopt a child, and you are obedient to that calling, He will provide for you every step of the way. You may encounter many roadblocks along the way but just keep your trust in Him and the adoption will happen in His time - and His time is always perfect.

It will be around $25000 AUD (about $18K USD) for us to adopt from Ethiopia.

In Australia, there is only one agency available for adoption - our State Government's "Department of Child Services". And 'private' adoptions are considered illegal. So, they have a monopoly on it - which I see both negatives and positives from.

We can adopt from the following 14 countries only - China, Lithuania, Mexico, Philippines, Hong Kong, Sri Lanka, Fiji, Colombia, South Korea, Chile, Ethiopia, Taiwan, Thailand and India.

Adopting from Ethiopia is probably one of the cheapest - China seems to be upwards of $40000 (About $30K USD).
