Hi all. Well right now I am playing DAOC. Been on it since day one. I've played EQ/Shadowbane/Anarchy Online/AC 1 and 2. I think these games are fine as long as you don't get addicted and it rules your life. As long as you have some control over it. And I do find I save money by playing the games I do play. Oh and another one coming out is Lineage II. Looks like a fairly decent MMORPG. Might give it a try when it comes out.

I've been trying to get into MMORPGs...the genre, itself, is so hard for me to keep entertained.

I played AC, AC2, DAOC, and currently SWG, and I'm just bored...

I'm a big FPS guy really...that's what gets me excited. Sitting around pressing the same buttons over and over and over to get some wood or metal to build a weapon or something is just plain boring to me.......

Now, FPS games...Call of Duty, Half Life, Tron 2.0, Halo, etc...you name it...I'm there...

Anyone an old TFC'er? I used to run a clan called Act of War...I loved Team Fortress Classic...

It's just that now everything that was based off of that Half Life engine is full of cheaters...no fun anymore...it started heading downhill around 2001...1998-2000 though -- man that was some good times -- late at night fragging people...ahhhh...the good ole days...

The main reason I got out of MMORPGs is the level system. It just doesn't cut it anymore. There is absolutely no way two adults in the real world could be so different in mental or physical abilities, even if they trained all the time, as a level 1 and a level (max) 99, 100, whatever.

Well if you are comparing any type of game to Real Life there is a problem. It is a video game bases off of imagination. Now if you did want to compare something like this then look at it this way. You are beginning martial arts and have no clue what you are doing. There is someone there who has been doing it for 20 years. Who do you think would be better? Even though your physical appearances are the same you lack the knowledge of that martial art and the skill to be better than him in it. This is the reason for the lvl differences. You could look at it as a Christian also. If you are a knew christian then most likely you won't have the understanding of Gods word like someone who has been a Christian for 20 yrs. This is anything in life. But don't go comparing games to life hehe. They are there for entertainment that is all.

I will admit -- even back in my console days, I always sought after the most realistic games.

Games like NFL Madden appeal to me much more than say Street Quarterback 2004...or something else that's not realistic.

I like realism in every thing. The more realistic it is, the more apt I am to buy it.

Oh, an old one I've started playing up again recently is The Violet Sector. Play it at http://www.tvsgames.com. It's also free, and it's mainly text-based (and playable on WAP too). It's a space game.

Each game start out with 4 legions, and you're randomly assigned to one. Each legion has a base and communications tower. If a legion loses its base, it can no longer respawn players (so if you die, you get respawned in one of the remaining legions). If it loses its communications tower, it loses its scanning ability (can't see ships in all sectors). Game ends when only one legion is left.

Ships are divided among fighters (including cloakers), bombers, and repairships. There are also capital ships for those who get enough points (there are 5 levels + the capital/carrier ship level). Turns are every 3 hours, and you get 5 moves per turn.

I just lost a level 4 repairship couple hours ago, but was vindicated when one of the level 5 cloakers who killed me was killed in return teammates. Yes, team work is very important in this game.

I play Star Wars Galaxies. I like it, but I'm really waiting for World of Warcraft to hit the shelves or open up for beta testing.

Played UO for 3 1/2 yrs when it first came out in 1997, I believe. Then EQ for a little over a year. DAoC for about 8 months on the PvP server- Mordred. Hmm.. Tried Shadowbane, it was fun, but the high level game was boring, so didn't last long there.

Horizons was a huge disappointment.

As far as paying a monthly fee. I don't mind at all. Its just another form of entertainment as far as I'm concerned, no different than someone who goes to the movies a few times a month (which actually cost more than a game sub that is available 24x7 for cost of 1 movie).

But to each his own

There are many Ultima Online shards that are free.

See this is the only way I would play them. I am sorry and I am not being cheap but if I go buy a game I expect to be able to play it without forking out subscription fees.

If you play a online game for 1 year your looking at paying $180.00 average for the game and the subscription.

You look at it from the one sided view. You have to remember something about MMORPGs... just buying the game ain't going to pay the bills.

When you run something like an MMORPG, it costs a LOT of money. Not just to create the game and distribute it, but also there are server costs, bandwith costs, support costs, employee wages, dev costs so they can make new things in the game and keep it changing... it's not a one time thing that says "ok, I paid my $39 for a brand new game (mind you, I waited 3 months before I bought Age of Shadows for UO and paid $10 for it), that should be all I need to pay." No, because their bills to keep the game running are in the tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars every month to run. So think about this. If you didn't pay that monthly fee, you would have no support, no servers to play on, no new things in game, no servers to hold the game on...

It's this simple, if you don't feel you should pay a monthly fee to help keep the game running, then by all means, continue to play your single player games. When you buy the game in the store, the only thing you pay for is the development and distribution of the game itself. The monthly fee helps pay for the services that keep the game running. However, there are a few game companies that are beginning to let people download the game for free (like UO/Lineage now are doing), and then just pay the monthly fee. But don't expect a brand new game like WoW to be free. They have spent years developing it and it's cost them probably in the millions just to finish the game itself...

I, myself, am waiting for the new game based on Raymond E. Feist's books.
