Discernment is the gift of ‘seeing’ right and wrong in a situation or a person, through the Holy Spirit's guidance. It is a Godly gift, meant I believe, for our protection and edification, and sometimes our correction. God’s Word says it can only be used by a believer.

1 Cor 2:14 “but the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.

Paraphrased from ‘How to Discern Spirits” by Virgil Johnson.

“ Science tells us that we only use 10% of our mind. That leaves 90% that compared with the nine spiritual gifts gives 10% for each gift. The 90% should out weigh the 10% of the carnal mind which is the enemy of God.

“For years we have tried to expand that 10% that God has given us to function in the natural realm. We have sent it to school and educated it, given it tasks. When it would have been better to expand one of the other 9 x 10%, such as the gift of wisdom.

“The 10% of the carnal mind gets me out of the rain, tells me to dress warmly when its cold outside, learns the ABC, and gets me to work, etc. The 90% tells me to think like God, act like God, and talk like God.

“God Himself uses the principle of 10% (tithing) - from man to God, and keeps 90% - from God to us. God gave the flesh 10% to function naturally and kept the 90% for Himself to gift and bless us through.

“In that 10%, God gave man a measure of faith. That is why we so often find ourselves limited in results. Sometimes we get healed and sometimes we do not. Sometimes we are financially blessed and sometimes we are not.

“Man works within the 10% of the carnal mind instead of our spiritual mind and uses the gift of faith which is unlimited.

End paraphrase.

Now, I don’t necessarily agree with this quote in entirety, but it brings up a 2 thought provoking concepts.

1. Where do we discern from?

We know the gift of faith is in the entirety of man - both carnal and spiritual.

Now we can use that gift from either part of us. If we were to use it just from our carnal man - then we could feel comfortable with also allowing anger, and pride, and other wrong attitudes to colour our approach to our fellow man.
Using it from our spiritual man, would be shown by a growth in the fruits of the spirit - peace, patience, etc.

Therefore the part which has the greater part of our gift of faith is also the part from which we use discernment.

Hebrew 4:12 For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

Now, God alone knows from wherein we gain discernment, and the Holy Spirit both guides and directs us continually to be using it from the right part of ourselves - that being the spirit rather than the carnal.

But, here’s a tricky bit.

2. How do we accept discernment?

By that I mean, which part of us accepts a direction of God through another person. Someone has a discerning message for us which brings correction. Which part of us accepts that? If it is man, the we often reject it - with anger at times. If it is spirit, we accept it - because we recognise God’s love behind it.

Hebrews 5:14 But solid food belongs to those who are of full age, that is, those who by reason of use have their sense exercised to discern both good and evil.

So discernment goes both ways.

And while we often hear a word from another, that is using proper spiritual discernment, we may not accept it at that moment because the time isn’t right. We are still in the carnal man with that matter.

It is entirely God’s doing whether we are given a word out of time, He is the only one who can look ahead and see if the time will ever come again. He is also the only one who can keep bringing situations into our lives that verify that original discerning word.

But it is important that if we are to use this gift wisely, we ask Him before we speak.

Ecclesiastes 8:5 He who keeps his command will experiene nothing harmful; and a wise man’s heart discerns both time and judgment.

The words discernment has been used in many posts lately. Perhaps this gives us a way of understanding it from both our side and the other person’s side, without simply assuming it is a judgement.

The error I see many of us in our 'discerning' is that we are quick to point out other people's lives, but not our own.

We're fooling ourselves when we think the 'gift of discernment' is for others only. Look in the mirror - most times we're not even able to discern our own lives and make sense of it. So I dare suggest before we ask God for this gift for 'edifying' others (mostly we judge others, and wrongly at that), that we use this gift to get ourselves sorted out. Particularly of late in this forum.

What irritates the hell out of me, are believers who claim to see devils and demons and evil all the time, and never God and his presence everywhere instead.

That's my rant, and I'm not sorry for it.

Well, andry, why don’t you tell us what you really feel!! ^_^ Personally, though, I am not as concerned about what “irritates the hell out of me” as by what irritates the hell into me.

This is excellent. My own position is that Discernment is not a normative form of cognitive abstraction but an expressed act of intuitive engagement at a spiritual level - a spiritual category.

So I would not be engaged in a normative enquiry into abstract notions of right and wrong but actually engaging the rightness and wrongness in things at the level of spirit, intrinsic nature, essence and substance of things in themselves.

I have taken this personally............
the 'error' you see? Are you discerning that? Are you one that can tell me to look in the mirror then? Could it be me in error, that ya'all are talking about? You know ,the one perhaps that has talked about 'devils' and that bad evil stuff that we are fighting because we are in a war? Isn't hell a bad thing, that even if irritation gets it out of you, would be a good thing for I am sure once its gone ,you will feel much better! I tried to clear things up with some yesterday, and all it seems to do is have others see themselves as the ones in the right...........I guess you got what you wanted.Since nothing I say registers right,I wont say anymore, and that's okay,I am who I am,and if you cant except me for it, and can talk like you have on that 'false discernment ' thread and don't consider your faults in the way you have looked at someone on this forum for their beliefs or call on their life, well I guess whatever His plan is for me here is done, and I guess you all can have your party now!
And I am not sorry for my rant, just sorry that we cant be 'one'.

As your sister-in-Christ, I have discerned (not judged) that in my short time at this forum, there is a serious problem here. I'm not pointing fingers at anyone, nor am I judging since it wasn't necessary. It's obvious that Satan is definitely "prowling" around this forum and doing the work he does best. He's causing dissension and division among the believers, his demon's are working over-time and what I see on several threads at this forum is disheartening. Nobody is sharing the love of Jesus, instead you're breaking his heart.

The topic "discernment" is a poor excuse to keep up this fight or argument between people at this forum. Now how's that for discernment? Hebrews 5:11-14 warns about falling away and says how we need solid food to grow. Verse 14 says, "But solid food is for those who are grown up. They have practiced in order to know the dirrerence between good and evil."

It seems as though some people are chewing on meat when they don't have their spiritual "teeth" here. Be careful what you say for you may choke on your words one day. Malachi 3:18 "You will again see the difference between good and evil people, between those who serve God and those who don't." Are you serving the Lord? Truly? When dissension enters the picture, it makes a person wonder who is being served. God or Satan?

A person who wasn't saved coming upon this forum could very well use your behavior as an excuse to avoid coming to Christ. Do you want their blood on your hands? I don't.

Ephesians 4:32 "Be kind and loving to each other, and forgive each other just as God forgave you in Christ."
Colossians 3:12-14 "God has chosen you and made you his holy people. He loves you. So always do these things: Show mercy to others, be kind, humble, gentle, and patient. Get along with each other, and forgive each other. If someone does wrong to you, forgive that person because the Lord forgave you. Do all these things; but most important, love each other. Love is what holds you all together in perfect unity.
Matthew 6:12,14-15 "Forgive us our sins, just as we have forgiven those who sinned against us...Yes, if you forgive others for their sins, your Father in heaven will also forgive you for your sins. But if you don't forgive others, your Father in heaven will not forgive your sins."

I say all this love. I am no better than you. I am a sinner saved only by the grace of God. I claim his promises as mine. But they are yours too, if only you reach out and take them. Please don't continue in your anger with each other. Make it right today. God will surely bless you when you do.

Peace

I see discernment as existing on three levels:
1. The soul level. Your conscious mind perceives circumstances and events occurring. These circumstances and events get passed to your subconscious mind. Your subconscious mind mulls over the material and submits a suggestion to your conscious mind as to the meaning of the circumstances and events. It just sort of floats up into your conscious mind. In the end this is just an opinion. It is a opinion arrived at on an subconscious level... but it it still just an opinion. People tend to want to elevate this sort of "discernment" to a higher level than mere opinion. There is no reason to think that the subconscious mind is any better at forming opinions than the conscious mind. I would take these discernment with a grain of salt. They are opinions.. like butts, we all have them and they all stink.
There is an added problem with soulish discernment. If your soul has endured any injury or is in a state of vexation, then your subconscious mind will be tainted as will all soulish discernment. Sick souls create sick opinions.
2. On your personal spirit level. Your spirit has function of "intuition". This is when something occurs to you, but you can't really say how or why. You just seem to "know" something without actually knowing why. It may take the form of an "assurance" or unfounded confidence about a thing. This is the true "discernment". In the believer it is always valid and always should be followed. It is the product of the spirit of Christ in us. It is the same mechanism that God uses to impart faith into our spirits. You receive faith by revelation, and revelation comes via the general mechanism of intuition.
3. On a God level. The Spirit tells your something. Technically this is not "discerning" since you are not doing it... you are just on the receiving end of a message from God. If you tell me the house is on fire... I did not discern that, you did. I just heard what you told me. To be true "discernment", the functional "discernment" has to come from within your own being.

What is dangerous, and likely the most common senario is when people recieve the "soulish" discernment described in #1 and attempt to convince themselves and others that it is actually a God given discernment. This (as pointed out in #3) is no discernment at all. They are claiming that God told them something which is not discernment... it is either word of knowledge, or word of wisdom, or prophecy--- AND SO SHOULD BE HELD TO THE REQUIREMENTS of those manifestations.

There is no such thing as a "gift of discernment". People use this phrase because they cannot find an actual Spirit manifestation that matches what they are doing... so they just MAKE SOMETHING UP. It is extra Biblical and just one step away from witchcraft.

James speaks to the very issue at hand:

James 3:14-17
14 But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth.
15 This wisdom descendeth not from above, but [is] earthly, sensual, devilish.
16 For where envying and strife [is], there [is] confusion and every evil work.
17 But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, [and] easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.

Verses 14 and 15 are exactly what I was referring to above. People mistake the earthly, sensual (Greek = soulical), even DEVILISH wisdom of the soul to be from God. It ALWAYS causes "strife" and is always the result of bitterness and envy. It can even be the result of a demonic influence on a vexed soul.

If God gives you information it will always be: "pure, then peaceable, gentle, [and] easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy".

If you are claiming to receive your "discernment" from God... then measure it against this standard. If someone brings you a discernment and it causes the negative results described above.... toss it and go get an ice cream.
Dids...
(going for an ice cream!)

Don't.

It's not about you unless you choose to. I didn't rant with you in mind, or anyone in this forum in particular.

My experience outside this forum (in the real world) has been the same. In fact, the desire for this 'gift of discernment' out-demands all the other gifts by a huge margin, yet in practice, all the other gifts are manifested more often than discernment.

In real life - so it's not about you - believers who call themselves 'demon-hunters' or 'demon-slayers' are often misguided and yes, in error, when everything they see has a demon or evil in it. It begs the question, "Why don't they see God instead?" I know I do.

What does God give us discernment for though? Are we supposed to attack those we have the discernment regarding and expose to them what we believe God has shown us? I'm not so sure thats a good way to handle discernment...especially in this day and age when it's so easy to sue...over anything.

I remember the time when I went to visit a church that I no longer attended because I had moved. The moment I shook hands with the then Pastor, I knew in my spirit the man was committing adultery.

Now this was the first time this had happened to me and I did not know what to do. I basically shook it off as if I just had an overactive imagination. It was a couple of years later I heard that the affair had been exposed and the man lost his church and nearly lost his family over it all.

I asked God why He had shared that information with me. I certaintly was in no position to approach this Pastor. God showed me that He showed me that information so that I could pray for him. I could pray that he confess his sins and repent and/or pray that his sins would be brought to the light in a manner that would be less hurtfull to everyone.

God does not share all that He knows with any of us. We do not "war" against flesh and blood....we need to remember that and stop treating people as if "they" are the enemy while the real enemy just stands by and watches us destroy ourselves with our tongues.

Thank you Quaffer - this is truth indeed. God gives us insights so we can pray into them and for them.

He is the general, He directs the army. He directs us to pray and we attack instead.

How many battles do you think He wins with us as the kind of soldiers that cannot obey His directions?

What does God see? That is what matters most!!!!!!!!!

My question stands.
If a person claims to have information from God...
Whether in the form of prophecy or a revelation or a "discernment"...
And if that person shares that information with others...
And if that information is found to be wrong....
Then is not that person to be held to the same stringent requirements as anyone else who claims to be speaking for God?
If they are wrong (which they are... often and badly) then are they also false prophets?

If we claim in any way to be speaking for God... we must be held accountable.
If someone claims to be be a "discerner" of the mind of God... then present the revelation and let the others judge.
That is the pattern and order of God.
Nobody has a free ride to claim to speak for God and not be held accountable.
Let one speak, and the others judge.

I think discernment is more like what Father Rick pointed out. Scripture does not say just the word "discernment", it says "discerning of spirits". Also according to scripture it says that God has plans for good and not evil yet when many who claim a discernment ability speak, they speak nothing but evil toward those they are speaking to.

How can these be the words of God and the thoughts of God when God says differently than what they are speaking? How can it be that God says He sent His son into the world not to condemn it but that the world through Him might be saved, yet some so called discerners only speak hell and damnation towards their hearers?

I grew up with this type of "discernment" and saw it only distroy and hurt people. Instead of the hearers being incouraged towards the Lord and His ways they were torn down and destroyed. They became discouraged, and in their feelings of uselessness and unworthiness they just gave up. How do I know this? They were in my family...the "discerners" AND the one's they were supposedly discerning.

The "discerners" meant well, I know they did....but the words they allowed to come from their mouths were not as unto life. They brought death. . .and to those who recieved it, at this point in time, they want very little to do with God. . .since that's what He "supposedly" thinks of them. :(

Personally, with a heart that is humble before God and seeking His will and His ways....God is not going to gossip and tell a third person how evil my heart is so that person can announce it to everyone and destroy me.

I don't know that I've said it very well but I too have been hurt in the last few weeks. Even though I know the accusations and "words from God" are not true it's still like my spirit has been spit upon and there is a bunch of holes where all the spit landed. Sometimes I think Christians/believers are the worst acting people on the earth.

Thank you so much for your heartfelt words. I must say as you know I've also struggled and had I not known God, to be perfectly honest these 'words from God,' would not have drawn me to Him, but would have made me run in the opposite direction. Could you see the Lost Son (Luke 15) longing to return to His Father, if all he knew he would get were words of condemnation and judgement, no I certainly cannot see this.

Sometimes I think we try too much and too hard to discern and analyze far too many things as believers. Everything that happens in our lives, we must 'discern', we must get out the Word.

In John 9:1-3 says that Jesus one day found a man who had been born blind, and His disciples get into analyzing it, ‘Who sinned, this man or his parents that he was born blind?’ You know we do that. And Jesus looked at His disciples, said, ‘Neither this man nor his parents.’

But this is what Jesus said: 'This happened…..’

That was the sum total of Jesus’ wisdom…. ‘This happened….’

And we’re all waiting for a ….. you know, ‘because 25 demons gathered together over Jerusalem, and made a pact together and started coming…’ so we need to bind and, Jesus said, ‘This happened, that the power of God might be manifested.”

So this happened, but all Jesus saw was so the power of God can be manifested. This happened simply giving an opportunity for the power of God to be manifested. This happened, to show a bareness so that we can bring the Kingdom of God into the bareness. But He did not analyze and got all worked up into a frenzy, ‘Oh we must pray and fast and start binding devils….’

So what Jesus saw, was an opportunity for God's presence to come. That's giving life, and grace, and mercy.

And in my life, while the devil may be at work at some issue or problem or relationship, I see it only as an opportunity to bring life and the Kingdom of God into that situation. And death flees.

Somebody once phrased, "You don't turn off the dark to get rid of the darkness, you turn on the light."

Thank you Andry - that's the core of the truth. No matter what the situation, when we leave God out of it, we are operating as man. And man = death.
