Well... Lately there has been a lot of discussion on this number, which i find totally irrelevant and only used as a cause for further argument. So in an effort to stop this I will convey MY knowledge of it.

Observe the Prophet (SAW) was illiterate.

As far as a I know 786 is the sum of of "bismillah ur rehman ur rahim". It is widely used throughout Pakistan and India by illiterate muslims. Whenever they are doing small business transaction or sale, they usually write 786 on the paper as they do not know how to write "bismillah". Keep in mind that 786 is always a written term, never spoken. Thus it is impossible to argue that the Prophet (SAW) was the originator of this as he was illiterate. Now thus far to my knowledge 786 is an innovation but nothing even close to jepordizing the integrity of islam. It is used by illiterates in the sub-continent. This 786 argument is as good as saying "what would a muslim do in the north pole, how would he pray" [since it is always sunlight] ? Hindu's however claim that 786 was originated by Muhammed (SAW) and is a representation of Aum which is absurd as told earlier (as muhammed [SAW] was illiterate and it represents bismillah).

Granted it is an innovation but not in the sense Prophet (SAW) meant "innovation" [MY OPINION]. It is used by illiterates who have no other choice and all judgement lies with God (SAW).

Now this is all I know.

Salamauluikum.

Is there any proof that Muhammed (SAW) was illiterate? Or is it something that has been used as a cover up for Islam all these years?

What proves he was illiterate?

And if people are illiterate to write "bismillah" how can they write 786? Illiterate people can write numbers? Why are many websites trumpeting 786? An illiterate person cannot run a website. So literate people also use 786.

Those who follow the Apostle, the unlettered Prophet, whom they find mentioned in their own (Scriptures), - in the Law and the Gospel . . . so believe in God and his Apostle, the unlettered Prophet. Surah 7.157, 158.

Now this may seem like circular logic to you, granted. But for muslims who believe in the quran it is proof enough. For further evidence i suggest u read a seerah (biography of the prophet [SAW])

well you have to understand the "illiterate" people i was talking about write only the most basic language. these poor people dont have enough money to be schooled (in pakistan i know many people who only know how to write basic urdu) thus numerals are not that hard for them. As for the literate people who use 786 knowingly when they can write bismillah then it is an innovation and the judgment lies with allah (SWT).
