What I'm Reading -- How About You?

Recently read a portion of Michael Grant's The World of Rome. Don't think I'll finish it out, but did gain some valuable insights on various topics -- Roman coins, law, literature, and a good discussion of the dissimilarities between Christianity and the pagan mystery religions. Now finishing up N.T. Wright's The Resurrection of the Son of God, and will definitely finish it through to the end.

Howdy all,
Currently: Scripture: Isaiah (but flipping back and forth amongst the O.T. prophets); Calvin Institutes: Book 2 chapter 2; Hendriksen's commentary on Romans & also John; picking through points in Berkhof's Systematic Theology. I'm going try to start going through More than Conquerors sometime this weekend.

Today I felt a need to drop all else, excepting scripture, and to read again The Bruised Reed by Richard Sibbes. He just has the right words on this and they are most helpful!

Currently I'm reading:

Willing to Believe by RC Sproul
The Institutes of the Christian Religion by John Calvin
The Westminster Confession of Faith
Spine of the World by RA Salvatore

Genesis in book by book study (I should finish today)
General daily topical bible study that covers whatever topic I'm interested in at the moment.

After the Sproul book I plan to read The Truth War by John Macarthur. I bought it the other day.

Keller's Reason for God is great! It was recommended to me by a Pastor. I read it and now think it is a book I will often return to. I recommend it to people who are skeptical.

just started this on Monday - early in the book Coach Dungy speaks to how, as a coach, he and his staff consider character when drafting players. He also states that character has long been a concern of the Indianapolis Colts - even before he became their coach.

He referred back to 1998 when the Colts were drafting a quarterback - their options Peyton Manning or Ryan Leaf. According to Coach Dungy it came down to what they saw as work ethic and character - and (as any NFL fan knows) they chose Manning. Two days after reading that in his book I read on ESPN that Ryan Leaf has been indicted on drug related charges. Not that the Colts knew this would happen, but I did find it rather interesting.

Can't recommend both books by Coach Dungy enough. I started Uncommon as soon as I finished Quiet Strength. It's so nice to read about someone who considers God first - in all aspects of his life.

Slowly, I am reading Calvin's Institutes, and Great Doctrines of the Bible by LLoyd-Jones...also The Attributes of God by A.W. Pink...I am going to order Pink's study on Hebrews.

I think I am not reading the Scripture enough though & simply praying before the Lord. (need to work on that)

Picked up a copy of the Evangelical Dictionary of Theology today. There are a lot of good entries, including the ones for covenant theology and dispensationalism. Overall, it looks like a really good reference.

I've found it immensely helpful as has helped my discussions with skeptics. Even before I had read the book i was always more inclined during discussions with people to zero in on their own pre/mis-conceptions about faith, belief etc, this book has helped me in this respect immensely.

When I first began to attend my present church they were just beginning a study of this book and it was so good, so helpful to me as I'd never before heard of the TULIP or doctrines of grace! I soaked it up like a dry sponge and have thanked our Lord over and over for bringing me to His great truth! The book so clearly documents the differences of arminianism and calvinism and gives scriptural validation of each point! I've never looked back!

Currently reading The Cruelty of Heresy: An Affirmation of Christian Orthodoxy, C. FitzSimons Allison. Provides a good summary of heresies in the early church along with providing practical examples of how the same heresies can take on new forms today.
