  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

What if there's a church out there that use christian rap/hip hop/rock/etc for worship, what would your reaction be?

(I hear the can of worms opening)

I personally like Christian hip hop. I think the majority of the songs are solidly reformed and are God honoring. But with that said, I would have a hard time envisioning some of our elderly folk rapping to Lacrae.

If its out there I don't know, but I know if I was forced to listen to it I would very annoyed since such music usually has horrible/bad/flat out wrong and backwards theology in it. Music is a teaching method, and when people with a passion for 'self expression,' singing or being the center of attention write songs but they don't have a passion for doctrine and teaching others rightfully, they get it wrong.

I agree. The rap that's coming out these days in some circles (Shai Linne, Hazakim, Timothy Brindle, Lecrae, etc.) is more theologically sound and rich than anything most of the churches I have attended ever sing. However, rap is tough to learn and the style of music itself would offend some, I'm sure (especially the older crowd). So I don't think it's realistic for Sunday service.

Big fan of tedashii, trip lee, lecrae, kb, pro, shai linne, etc here :)

I listen to rap exclusively these days. Each song is like a sermon, and sometimes even deeper, theologically, and more profound than a lot of sermons.

I've heard Christian rap and it was not bad in any way I could think of. However, I am the type of person who prefers solemnity in worship. I dislike even Christian "rock" music and see it as being too worldly and symptomatic of the problems in the Church. This, however, is more like an argument between a Christian declaring that we should not eat pork or something, and another saying it doesn't matter.

These are good points too. I have never really cared for rap, but have grown to appreciate it because of the content. I have a friend who has always liked rap, but these days listens to these godly artists on the computer with his head in his hands in prayer, sometimes weeping. There is great reverence there. Certainly that's not the case for everyone though. Some only hear the beat or music and cannot get past that. We need to be sensitive to that. Same with rock music. I don't have an issue with it in general, but have a hard time finding any reverence in it in a Sunday service. When our music team jazzes up old hymns, the reverence is lost and it becomes awkward. It's a great idea in theory, but doesn't seem to work out so well in practice.

I think Genesis 1 - 11 is actually ancient rap, not actually prose or metaphor, just sounds kinda like that.

Gen 1-11 is really literal, it's just written in rap. If you could see Moses in front of you bending his knees, doing his fingers in that funny way, had his cloak down around his knees, reciting it, you'd see how it makes perfect literal sense.

or not...

Personally I don't care for rap; but I'd be far more concerned over their perspective toward the scripture than over the form of music used in worship. The music, to me, sets the stage for the real meat to come. If it does it for someone, who am I in my limited understanding to argue?

Certainly. Personally, I care more for content than the tune, though the tune is not an non-issue. But take this song, for instance (this is where my siggy comes from). Talk about getting you into the right state of mind! The sermon I heard at church today (and don't even get me started on the mindless repetitive music!! lol) was sadly nothing compared to what this five and a half minute piece of art has to offer:

An interesting question with some very good responses

In my opinion it would cause more trouble than what it's worth to actually include it into Sunday worship. There needs to be a general consensus among the congregation, and as a few people have stated, it would be too controversial among the older crowd. I will say this however, I think it can be/has been a FANTASTIC bridge in bringing non-believers closer to being saved.

I don't know how rap/hip-hop would fit into worship. It might work; I just can't envision it. If it works, it wouldn't be my preference, but I don't see a problem with it.

Rock/CWM is used in a lot of churches (my own included), and I have mixed feelings about it. I don't think that there is anything wrong with it per se, but I think we need to find a respect for the musical traditions of the church as well.
