How is it that Calvinists give up their faith, then? The usual answer is that they were not really elect. The short answer is, If you understood what Calvinism teaches, you wouldn't ask that question.
To explain, Because Calvinism teaches that those whom God has predestined unto salvation are those who will hear, believe and obey God's Word, the very fact that they do is evidence of predestination.

No wonder Calvinists give up.OK, fine. You don't want to define what you mean, so you must think you already know the answer. So why'd you ask the question?
Yes, God commands us to do good works, it's our duty and we were created for this.
No wonder Calvinists give up.
Then how does a Calvinist know that he is really elect?Calluna,

It is the usual answer because it is the logical answer.
Then how does a Calvinist know that he is really elect?
That means that Calvinists don't know that they are elect. The Spirit's witness is that, provided faith is maintained, God's friendship exists and salvation will be achieved. But the Spirit does not tell anyone that they will maintain faith. The Spirit does not provide tests that are not really tests. That is why faith is worked out in fear and trembling. Why does a Calvinist (or anyone else who believes on Christ, for that matter) need something beside their own faith and the inner witness of the Spirit?
We walk by faith, not by sight.

So Calvinism is the most pointless theology, because no-one knows who the elect are. Because that is so, there is reason to believe that, whoever the elect may be, they are not Calvinists.
The Spirit's witness is that, provided faith is maintained, God's friendship exists and salvation will be achieved.
Spoken like a true Catholic. What twisted logic!
Scripture for that please? And more than one. Let everything be established at the mouth of two or three witnesses.
God knows who the Elect are. But by your reasoning, God is not trustworthy enough for us to let Him have that knowledge to Himself.
The underlying unspoken thing you are saying is that you believe that someone could believe on Christ, live their whole life walking with Him, and yet not be saved, and that would be a waste, because they could have been eating and drinking and making merry, i.e. sinning their heads off, if they had known they weren't going to be saved in the end. Isn't that so?
That thinking is in itself a product of the unregenerate mind.
If that is the reason you reject Calvinism, you prove quite clearly that you haven't got a clue as to what Calvinism teaches, and you have some serious issues with Christianity itself.
Not quite. Anyone who believes himself to be predestined is presumptuous- or, those who claim to be predestined are liars. There is nothing wrong with the doctrine of predestination.Christians who disobey God can't be of the elect, therefore anyone who believes the doctrine of predestination believes so, presumptuously. That is what is being said.
