I think Valentine's day is over rated and is just another commercial day for companies to sell more chocolate and Jewelers to sell more jewelry.

Of course, it is. But if it helps couples reignite that smoldering fire, or if it fans the existing flames, I think that's wonderful.
How to undercut the commercialization? That's where the smart money is. Guys, usually, don't care about Valentines. But she probably does. If he makes her a homemade Valentines and takes her out for a good meal, she will either be smitten or upset, which is a good barometer for knowing if it should be broken off before the next Valentines rolls around lol. So, you either undercut the companies that are trying to profit off your love, or you gain wisdom and drop her like a hot potato.
UnsurprisIngly, perhaps, I haven't had a reason to be concerned about Valentines for years, and I don't plan on having one anytime soon.
It's Ray! Hello RaySuch a positive outlook and I agree!

I agree. Christmas is probably the most commercialized holiday ever lol, but we still celebrate it.I think that companies will commercialize almost anything though. I don't think the holiday is a problem in and of itself, it is more up to the individual to decide what they do with it and what tends to be their focus... is it family, friendships, connection, or just expensive things? I am starting to realize how some traditions can help keep us more grounded and connected amidst this very disconnected world. To me it really doesn't matter if it is a calendar holiday, or if you make up your own holidays and traditions to create a special bond with others, just whatever works to help you pause amidst the busy months and have special time with those you care about. It is our own individual responsibility what we decide to focus on and what is important to us. Although I myself tend to prefer quality time over gifts, I also don't think there is anything wrong with buying things for those you love. The problem isn't the money or the gift, it is when things become more important than people or the relationship.
