A while ago, I was praying and heard a voice say, "Get rid of demons." Kind of freaked me out, first time something like has happened to me. But I'm still wondering, what demons? I have treatment resistant depression along with other mental illnesses. Could it be related to this and the voice was Lord telling me he won't answer my prayers until I get rid of this?

Getting rid of demons is good advice for all of us. No, it doesn't mean that the Lord won't answer your prayers until you have. He is always with us and listens to our prayers. In fact praying to the Lord is just what He wants us to do, He would never want to discourage you from praying.

There are several possibilities for the source of what you heard. That it was from God seems unlikely.

A person can have thoughts that originate within themselves that may be mistakenly taken to be from God. This can be even more likely if there are mental health issues.

It could have even been from a demon attempting to draw you into that world where you might be further deceived. However, this level of communication may require having already dabbled with the occult.

Christians generally have little to do with demons because;

1Jn 4:4 Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.

We all need to get rid of demons.

"Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. 8 Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded. 9 Lament and mourn and weep! Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom. 10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up." Jam 4

Also "Therefore, since these [great] promises are ours, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from everything that contaminates and defiles body and spirit, and bring [our] consecration to completeness in the [reverential] fear of God." 2Co 7:1. Of course, God cleanses us.

Eph 4 was written to believers, the church - "...whosoever believeth" in God and His only begotten Son (John 3:16, II Pet 3:9). Eph 4:27 states "Neither give place to the devil." Another version "Leave no [such] room or foothold for the devil [give no opportunity to him]." Pro 4 can be one resource.

'Get rid of demons'.. hmm as someone else mentioned, we all need to get rid of our 'demons'

No Christian is immune to their own shortcomings.. it's a work in progress even for the devout.

Take the Apostle Paul for example.. he struggled with vanity and conceitedness.

So much so that a thorn was given Him in the flesh (a messenger of Satan) to keep him from becoming overly conceited due to the surpassing visions and revelation he was receiving in the Lord (2 Corinthians 12:1-10).

It's a very interesting passage of scripture.

This 'messenger of Satan' that Apostle Paul had.. it was permitted by God to stay, for it served a purpose (according to scripture).

However, I think most demons serve no such purpose.. so we should work to 'resist the devil' by submitting to God.

Then the devil (demons) will flee on their own.

'Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.'

(James 4:7)

Hope this helps.
