  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What Hymnal?

What hymnal is your church currently using? Or have they completely done away with the hymnal and gone to a screen only?

Our church uses the Celebration Hymnal (1997), and the words are also projected on a screen. Often though, the songs we want to use are not in the hymnal, so we must use the screen alone.

We principally use "Hymns for the Family of God". We also use "The Celebration Hymnal", especially when we want to add instruments other than guitar, organ, and/or piano, etc. (since this hymnal has instrumental parts already scored for it).

"Hymns for the Family of God" is a nice hymnal. It was the Gaither's first vernture into hymnals, and includes many of their songs. This one was followed up by "Worship His Majesty" which I prefer, but I an in the minority, because this one did not sell nearly as well. The latter is the only hymnal I have ever seen that includes the old song "Bless This House."

Well, we use Lutheran Worship... Seems to have most everything, though it can't stay away from the need to alter the classics...
Alter the classics? In what way-is it the same way that "The Worshipping Church" hymnal does?

I go to a Lutheran church and thus, we tend to use Lutheran hymnals. We're using three different ones at the moment - they are the Lutheran Book of Worship (LBW), Hymnal Supplement (1992, I think - HS), and With One Voice (WOV). We'll also just use songs from other worship and praise books because we have a CCLI (Chrisian Copyright Liscense International) registration and are allowed to copy songs to use them for worship as long as they are also registered with CCLI - and that's a lot of artists!

LBW? aka "The Green Book"? I'm Lutheran, so I know things about the Lutheran hymnals, it seems - plus, I love and collect hymnals and praise and worship songbooks.

I also collect hymnals, but my collection is quite small. My oldest one is Glorious Gospel Hymns (1933), published by the Nazarene Publishing House.

My collection is small as well. I mainly have hymnals that have been given to me from churches - two SDA hymnals, one LBW, and then one Lutheran "African" hymnal I bought. I have quite a bit of Praise and Worship music, but it's not all that much.

LW is the Blue Book!

I think IBW is the Green Book. Never seen it. But, LW makes so many changes to the old hymns- both to make them sound modern- no "Thee, THou, Thy, etc..." and sometimes to make the theology fit..

Too bad the changes are seemly made by someone with no ear for poetry...

Just curious-can you give an example of changes to make the theology fit?

I'll have to get a good look at it Sunday... I've noticed a good many while singing them, can't remember a single example off the top of my head.

Our LCMS church uses:
Lutheran Worship (Blue Book) most Sunday
The Lutheran Hymnal (Red Book) every 5th Sunday
Hymnal Supplement '98- occasionally

I grew up with the TLH, we moved about a year ago and joined a church that uses LW. I am an old school Lutheran and prefer the TLH but the LW is slowly growing on me.

We use:

"Hymns For The Spirit" it was published by the Church of God (Cleveland, TN), in like 1955. It has all the basic hymns like "I'll Fly Away" "Power in the Blood" and "Keep On The Firing Line", but it has songs composed by Pentecostal Songwriters, that focus on the Holy Ghost Power, with songs like "Let The Holy Ghost Come On In","Pentecostal Power" and "Let The Holy Ghost From Heaven Fall On Me". But, we also use a lot of Southern Gospel Songs in addition to the Hymns.
