I've been using phpBB for a forum and am getting fairly good at adding on some easy mods. However I want to sort of move up to something more like Drupal or PHP-Nuke as a more rounded solution. PHP-Nuke offers phpBB built right in to the software. Drupal seems more high powered and flexible. :help:

I've used quite a few in the last few years...

Started off with E-Blah, too many bugs and very painful to add any kind of mod without heavy coding.

Then moved to phpBB used it for awhile accidenly dumped it, i was still a forum noobie and didn't know what i was really doing.

Then I used an old version of invision that my web host gave me for free. It was alright but not as clean as phpBB and I couldn't upgrade the software

Went back to phpBB forum got dumped, this time not my fault.

Started back with phpBB but then transfered it all over to a SMF forum due to the fact that it would integrate into my Joomla site perfectly. They are getting a very clean look and good mechanics in the later releases. I can't wait for the upgrade to 1.1.

Right now I have 2 SMF forums and one phpBB forum for my dads business website that gets basically no posts.

Having said all of that I somewhat agree with theartist87 except I would say SMF for free and vbulliten or Invision for pro jobs.

i'm too much of an open source person... i don't pay for software, it's not right (not that i pirate software either, that's not right either)...

so i go for phpBB i think... i'm gonna be putting up a set of forums some time soon, so i tried a bunch of open source forums... and none of them matched up to phpBB as i have experienced it.

I'd say rethink unless you have it up already. SMF really is the best right now, and I was a big fan of phpbb for years...

I've just recently revamped my web site. I'm now using PostNuke and am very pleased with the tremendous following it has. Which means plenty of add on modules. The modules are easy to install and one of them that I installed is PNphpBB2 a take-off on phpbb. The whole website is coming together wonderfully. I even was able to install games to play.

I have tried alot of free forum and professional forum sw and VBulliten is definatly the best professional.

For free, I would stay away from phpBB, though I like what you can do with it, there are way to many exploits and security holes. I would say the best free forum software is either PunBB or Simple Machines.

Yeah, as I said earlier, XMB. Easily modified to add new features. Like image verification (yes, I know phpBB does this natively).

I had to put image verification on my XMB forums since I had a whole bunch of spammers sign up with links to sites of an explicit nature (try and guess!). As you can see, this is evidently really not a good idea when you're running forums for a church, so we put a stop to that with image verification, which was pretty easy to install...
