It was hard for me to see you go to all that effort when i was not talking about the Lazarus you are talking about.. There where two different men called Lazarus mentioned in the Gospels.. The Lazarus Jesus resurected was not the Lazerus who was a begger at the rich mans door.. Two different men..

.

First, nobody went to heaven before Christ resurrection, but after his resurrection the righteous will fall asleep but their spirit will be present with the Lord in heaven. Second, it does say he was asleep but do you understand the soul and the spirit can be separated by the word of God? Many have had near death experiences and have gone to heaven or hell and returned since the Resurrection. Jesus went into the lower regions of the earth and preached to the dead. This was in Abraham's bosom. It was a place separate from the burning hell. About 500 of the old testament prophets were seen around the country after Jesus rose.
Third, yes the body may have started to rot, though only the people said this not Jesus.
Five, No-one was having fun in heaven until after Jesus resurrection. But we are now after his resurrection.
For 6 and 7, again, there is a soul and there is a spirit. When absent from the body we are present with t he Lord so either one of these or both are present with Jesus in heaven while the body sleeps until the rapture. Those who are raptured do not wait until judgement day. If we are found worthy we will be caught up in a twinkling of an eye. This mortal will put on immortality and this corruption will put on incorruption. At the rapture it is a done deal for many. We must all stand before the judgement seat of Christ, but for the worthy they will receive rewards and miss out on rewards. They will escape hell but will be cleansed with fire. Some will have mansions while others might have a shack in a desert. Just kidding but you should see this from Jesus teachings.

Your reply was awesome and to the point and to many that is all they need. However, for some, as I was when I first accepted the truth of Jesus, we desire a deeper understanding. So if Jesus went into the lower regions of the earth to preach to Abraham's bosom and Lazarus could see hell from there, and there is lava flowing in the lower regions of the earth, to me it is not so difficult to understand.

I think there is something about God's word that is hard to except. But if we cast down every high thought and imagination that rises up against God's Word we will eventually come to a true understanding. Many preach today of total annihilation, like the JWs, because they can't fathom a righteous God who would punish the wicked. But God said it so I believe it and my science shows me where it is so hey....

Jesus went into the lower regions of the earth and preached to those in prison. What is in the lower regions of the earth? Lava!
So I would say with all other scripture included hell is a real place in the lower regions of the earth and the parable was true.
As for the rich, he said it is harder for a camel to go through the eye of the needle than for a rich man to enter heaven. But with man it impossible, with God nothing is impossible. Camels had to get on their knees to go through the place called "The Eye of The Needle". Now was David, Solomon, and many other rich men of the old testament in Abraham's bosom? Was Abraham rich? I assure you these are in heaven now. It is surely hard for a rich man to rely on God, but it is not impossible for God to lead them in.

Interesting that Hades is not in the KJ version and that Hades was the ancient Greek king of the underworld and god of the dead. Who cares what the Greek believed. And why did they change it in the newer versions, like so many other scriptures?
Hell is hell is hell! Don't go there!

Authors wrote according to what was known at the time. It was thought that Hell was deep in the earth, but we know these days that this is not the case. When Jesus died he left the physical universe and went somewhere else outside the universe. The Greeks believed in a physical world and a spiritual world. This may explain some things, for example, how angels and demons come and go from the physical world and another "world" we know little of.

It was a parable, and the rich man was depicted as an unbelieving rich man, not a believer. That's why he ended up where he was. Lazarus was a believer so he ended up in Abraham's bosom. The point of the parable was not wealth. It was that there was basically no difference between people in God's view. He does not favour or discriminate against rich folks. He sees people in terms of believers or unbelievers.

I beg to differ with you; You say, "we know these days that this is not the case." I don't know who the we are that you speak of.
Did they get a revelation from Jesus that is contrary to what scripture says? Many denominations have been started this way.
Again, if scripture says Jesus went into the lower regions of the earth and we know that there is a layer of lava in the lower regions of the earth, why do so many try to deny that hell is there? This goes beyond reason. We are told in the word to cast down imaginations and high thoughts that rise up against the word and bring every thought captive to Christ.
I see absolutely no reason to alter my convictions.

Correct there are 2 Lazarus in the bible.
  1. One was used as a parable
  2. The other was the friend of the Lord Jesus
What I have disclosed was the friend of the Lord Jesus Christ.
He has been dead for 4 days
Jesus requested that the tomb be opened
Martha discouraged the opening of the tomb because the body was in a state of decomposition.

Now where have Lazarus been for 4 days?3
In day 1 - in the tomb
In day 2 - in the tomb
In day 3 - still in the tomb
Day 4 - still in the tomb until the Lord Jesus said

1 Peter 3:19 does not say that Jesus went into the lower regions of the earth. It says that He went and preached to the spirits in prison. The "lower regions of the earth" is a medieval concept of hell, which is found nowhere in Scripture.

What exactly is hell?

Exactly?

I've never seen, nor can I give a complete answer to that.

Maybe a/the bigger question should be, why is that? Is it intentional...something God chose to not make completely clear?

There are 2 kinds of hell in the bible:
  1. Hell = grave (Ready for Occupancy)
  2. Hell = second death (Coming Soon!)
Likewise there are 2 kinds of heaven in the bible also:
  1. Heaven = what we see when we look up
  2. Heaven = where God and the angels are
Hell = grave
  1. Where people who died are
  2. Where the devil and his angels are

Psalm 139:7-9 New King James Version (NKJV)

Where can I go from Your Spirit?
Or where can I flee from Your presence?
If I ascend into heaven, You are there;
If I make my bed in hell, behold, You are there.
If I take the wings of the morning,
And dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea,

Commentary: If I make my bed in hell - what the hell does this mean?
Let us check another version of the bible - let us not interpret like others are doing.

Psalm 139:7-9 New Living Translation (NLT)

I can never escape from your Spirit!
I can never get away from your presence!
If I go up to heaven, you are there;
if I go down to the grave, you are there.
If I ride the wings of the morning,
if I dwell by the farthest oceans,

Commentary: If I make my bed in hell = if I go down to the grave
Hell = Grave

2 Peter 2:4 New International Version (NIV)

For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but sent them to hell, putting them in chains of darkness to be held for judgment;

Commentary: but sent them to hell - where is that? Let us check another version of the bible - let us not interpret like others are doing.

2 Peter 2:4 Tree of Life Version (TLV)

For God did not spare angels when they sinned, but threw them into Sheol. He put them in chains of gloomy darkness, to be held until the judgment.

Commentary: but sent them to hell - threw them into Sheol - we are getting warmer where is that? Let us check another version of the bible - let us not interpret like others are doing.

Job 26:6 Amplified Bible, Classic Edition (AMPC)

Sheol (the place of the dead) is naked before God, and Abaddon (the place of destruction) has no covering [from His eyes].

Commentary: but sent them to hell - threw them into Sheol - Sheol (the place of the dead) Hell = Grave - the devils are in the cemetery a.k.a. Hell

But there is another kind of hell - a fiery one.

Matthew 5:22New International Version (NIV)

But I tell you that anyone who is angry with a brother or sister will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to a brother or sister, ‘Raca,’ is answerable to the court. And anyone who says, ‘You fool!’ will be in danger of the fire of hell.

Revelation 21:1-8 New International Version (NIV)

Then I saw “a new heaven and a new earth,” for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. ‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”

He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!” Then he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.”

He said to me: “It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To the thirsty I will give water without cost from the spring of the water of life. Those who are victorious will inherit all this, and I will be their God and they will be my children. But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars—they will be consigned to the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.

This hell will come after the end of the world and on Judgement Day.
Currently no one is in this hell - the second death. When everything is done, people will be thrown in the fiery lake of burning sulfur.

Isaiah 55:8-9
8 For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord.

9 For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.

Ecclesiastes 9:5
5 For the living know that they will die, but the dead know nothing, and they have no more reward, for the memory of them is forgotten.

If you "know nothing" there is no awareness. If there is no awarness, you are unaware of the passage of time. If you are unaware of the passage of time. When you were alive you were aware, you die and you cease to be aware. The next moment of awareness is the resurrection at which point to YOU (from YOUR perspective) you are as Paul states to be absent from the body is to be in the presence of the Lord.

Time and awareness are a construct of this physical reality. Death separates you from both (time and awareness)

Hell in the vast majority of scriptures is the GRAVE

Hi, I was looking to explain heaven to my BIL, who says he is saved and reads to me from a track. The track is gospel but he doesn't believe in the Bible.
While studying Revelation ch. 22, I found Ch.22v15 disconcerting. I checked to find more chapters where there was no sinner left in the new earth but Revelation only has 22 chapters.
Ch. 21 deals with the last judgment, the lake of fire and all that go into it. Then God creates a new earth with no oceans and the holy city Jerusalem descends in a 1500 mile square cube. Apparently that is not all heaven because according to scripture, outside the gate exists a world according to verse 15.
I've looked up several commentaries and it seems the commentators overlooked the essence of the verse ,and rather concentrate on the meaning of dogs.
The first thing that popped into my mind is the parable of the 5 virgins that ran out of oil. All of Matthew Ch. 25 seems to verify that there is an outer darkness, ( could that be sort of like a purgatory?) or will those disobedient, unrepentant believers be there forever looking at the lights of heaven? And what about the blood that washes us as we repent?

What is a parable?

  • A parable is a succinct, didactic story, in prose or verse, which illustrates one or more instructive lessons or principles.
  • a short allegorical story designed to illustrate or teach some truth, religious principle, or moral lesson. a statement or comment that conveys a meaning indirectly by the use of comparison, analogy, or the like.
The parable of the 10 virgins instructive lesson is be prepared always for the return of the Lord Jesus Christ.

There is no purgatory Madam @katinka , purgatory is an invented and concocted place so that people would give money called indulgences. It was used as a money making scheme - a scam

There is a heaven - it is where God is, the angels are, the 4 living creatures are, the 24 elders are, Enoch, Elijah and the Lord Jesus Christ are - these are the 3 human beings who are in heaven. How about the people who have died? They are buried or have returned to dust. That is our destiny, everyone dies. Come Judgement Day, we will be judged accordingly.

Thank you, but your reply only addresses the matter of the existence of a purgatory. I tried to say that Re 22:15 may have given rise to the idea of there being a purgatory. I do not believe there will be a purgatory.
The parable of the ten virgins was just an example. The five virgins which had no oil apparently knew the bridegroom and maybe they were not destined to hell, and maybe here are others like them, the back sliders and such. I am just interested to know why Re 22;15 exists. No one seems to even notice that verse.
I was questioning the apparent outer darkness around the New Jerusalem after the new heaven ad the new world was created. and after the white throne judgment where all the wicked were thrown into the lake of fire. .

i know that many people believe differently but when it comes to the king james Bible and others when it comes to the hebrew word translated soul(nephesh)and the greek word translated soul(psk'khe)these greek and hebrew words in the context which they are used i myself have never seen the Bible saying we have souls but that we are souls and there is a difference in those statements, because of that the word hell is being used figuratively i believe

Well As Christians we believe in what the Bible says as being the final authority. The Word of God speaks of a heaven and also of a place called hell. There is no mention of a staging area call "purgatory" in the Christian Bible. This means when a person dies they either go to heaven or straight down to hell, there is no second chance, you don't negotiate with God, its a done deal. Now hell isn't a social club for sinners, it is a place of eternal torment, the worst immaginable. Now the question is simple - what if you died today is there really is an afterlife, do you really want to take that risk? Isn't it better to make your peace with God, then carry on with your life with the inner peace and assurance that if you were to die today crossing the street, that you would immediately go to be with the Lord Jesus Christ and to a wonderful place called heaven? Why take the risk? Pray and believe in the Lord Jesus Christ today and He will forgive you your sins, then turn from your ways and follow Jesus, don't delay a moment longer.
