• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

What does it mean to have a carved image of what is in heaven?

Would it be okay to read an illustrated Bible?

"You shall not make for yourself a carved image—any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me," (Exodus 20:4-5 NKJV)

Note: the passage that you are referring to has a qualifier in it, which has to do with worship. In other words, it's not necessarily a sin to make an image; but it is a sin to worship an image as such. We are to worship God alone; not carved images. Therefore, it isn't sinful to read an illustrated Bible; for you are not worshiping the illustrations; rather, you are merely looking at them.

I'm confused. Is not jealousy a sin?

To the OP, it's perfectly fine. The passage you refer to means not to idolize a person on the face of this earth other than Jesus Christ. Let Jesus Christ be the centre point of your life.

God's statement of being jealous is meant to be understood within the context of Him not wanting to share His personal possession (us) with false gods. It has nothing to do with the idea of being discontent for not having something that doesn't belong to Him. Just as there is a time to be angry when injustice takes place, there is a time to be jealous when someone takes something that belongs to you and uses it for a purpose for which it was not intended to be used, that is, to cause harm. Hence it is a matter of identifying the context of the situation to determine what is sinful versus what constitutes a just emotion.
