Is there a difference between doing what God says (or what we think God says) we should do and doing what God desires? I get the feeling that to most Christians doing the will of God is a reference to what God says we should do. To me it God's will is that we should know Him and the truth about Him, or more precisely get rid of false or antiquated ideas about Him.

"For my Father's will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day." John 6:40

It's ALWAYS about Jesus. And whenever anyone tries to make it about anything else...it's still ALWAYS about Jesus.

Where do you see that view of the will of God presented?

JM
I get it from considering the text freeindeed cited above with this one: [bible]John 17:3[/bible] The will of God is that we may have eternal life and this text explains life eternal.

There are lots of texts that can be used in the format of A=B=C.

So it doesn't happen often but I have to give Senti credit on this one. Nicely done, never consider that one before.

I love math and I love it when texts fall into that particular "formula".

Ugh, not a big fan of math. I am a huge history buff though. Still, nice formula serpiente. I do believe that God does have a will for your life by using your talents that He gave you for Him.

You know I prefer context.

But I guess the next question, what is knowing God? (which isn't really what the text is saying).

You have the reference. Nothing prevents you from exploring the context. The question boils down to how do you get to know a being who is invisible? You have to resort to a proxy and the best proxy are the things that He made along with the rules that govern them. [BIBLE]Romans 1:20[/BIBLE]

Knowledge about the universe and the laws that govern it. And pretty much any physicist knows far more about the universe then any nonscientist.

JM
But you are only focussing on one part or aspect of the universe. Personal relationships are also part of the universe. You are still bogged down in the us vs. them paradigm. This is not about who knows more but on how we get to know.

Personal relationships are hard to define.

I know some scientists (who I disagree with), who don't beleive in love/etc. They consider that just responses of chemicals brought upon by genetics/hormones/phermones/etc.

Since we are back on this track let's try to keep it on an even keel. We have folk here who are here only to look for the slightest reason to report a post.

I have never met you and I have certainly never met your father. However, since you are the product of your father you share quite a few of his characteristics. In other words, you are the image of your father. Not an exact image but an image all the same. Chances are you communicate in ways that are similar to some of the ways in which he communicates and it probably comes through in this medium. You know what they are but I don't. However, I have experienced a bit of him simply by iteracting with you. Yet, I cannot go around boasting that I know what he is like even though I have certainly seen a bit of him in you.
