To become a new creation is to have all of your previous sins forgiven through baptism, see Acts 2:38. You receive pardon for everything before, and start life innocent, see Romans 3:25. After baptism a person receives the Holy Spirit and is "born again" into the newness of life, see Acts 8:17.

Are we really a new creation? What does it mean to be born again?

We are born condemned (Ro 5:18), spiritually dead in Adam's sin imputed to us (Ro 5:12-14), by (our fallen) nature objects of wrath (Eph 2:3).

To be born again is a sovereign act of the Holy Spirit, who is as unaccountable as the wind (Jn 3:3-8), where we are given eternal life and made sons of God (Jn 1:12-13).

We are a new creation in that we are a new person, no longer dead in sin and condemned, but having eternal life, made sons of God, who share in Jesus' personal inheritance (Ro 8:17).

Some more scriptures:

Matthew 28:18-20 shows us that the baptism commanded by Jesus is what makes us his disciples.

It is this water baptism that washes away our sins and makes us born again. Acts 2:38, Acts 22:16

John 3:3-5 Jesus answered and said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”
4 Nicodemus said to Him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?”
5 Jesus answered, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.

It is the water of baptism and the word(s) commanded by Jesus in Matthew 28:18–20 that cleanse us of our sins. The Holy Spirit (Sanctifier) enters into our souls and we become Jesus' disciples.

Ephesians 5:26 that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word,

Yes, we become a New Creation.

To be Born Again means to have one's Genome re-written.

For the Redeemed, their modified Genome will remove sin...

Zechariah 3:9
"For behold the stone that I have laid before Joshua; upon one stone shall be seven eyes: behold, I will engrave the graving thereof, saith the LORD of hosts, and I will remove the iniquity of that land in one day."

For those that are not redeemed, they get a corrupted Genome.
