What do you think of sky burial?

Sky burial or ritual dissection was once a common funerary practice in Tibet wherein a human corpse is cut in specific locations and placed on a mountaintop, exposing it to the elements and animals – especially to birds of prey. In Tibetan the practice is known as jhator, which literally means, "giving alms to the birds."

The majority of Tibetans adhere to Buddhism, which teaches rebirth. There is no need to preserve the body, as it is now an empty vessel. Birds may eat it, or nature may let it decompose. So the function of the sky burial is simply the disposal of the remains. In much of Tibet the ground is too hard and rocky to dig a grave, and with fuel and timber scarce, a sky burial is often more practical than cremation.

I think buddhism is a false religion and that only those who trust Christ as savior will be saved from the outpouring of the wrath of God in hell. So buddhists need Christ and should be evangelized.

However, I think God can do anything he needs to a body and a sky burial will not effect the future resurrection. Nor will any other means of bodily destruction.

It sounds rather creepy to me. I definitely don't want to have a sky burial done for my body. I know that it won't affect the resurrection but it just sounds... I don't know... weird to me.

Tibetan Buddhism is very different than other Buddhist sects due to their strange rituals, and beliefs which often don't "flow" with the actual teachings of the Buddha. But IMO, a sky burial is just another way of dealing with a corpse, just like burying it in dirt, or cremation.

Who would do the cutting?

Today I watched a video on the Hitler regime, and they showed jaws removed for gold fillings, boxes of the gold fillings, hair used for mattresses, skin used for lampshades... so it was a bit much to read the OP in a subjective way.

I personally don't have a problem with the dust-to-dust concept, because our spirits leave our bodies at death. But most cultures consider it respectful to treat a loved one's body with honor. Some people don't even want to be cremated because they are afraid they will feel it.

have you got anything to say, Sphinx, or are you just going to post pretty images?

Anyway, who cares what happens when you die? The body is dead and gone. I don't think I'd go for sky burial but I don't want people to waste money on buying me a coffin. Put me on a pyre and set me on fire. Bury me under a lemon tree. Get my ashes and scatter them over the sea. I couldn't care less, really.

Freeze my body, so that at my Requiem Mass & burial any of my loved ones may view my corpse. I would prefer to be buried in a simple white linen shroud; naturally, no embalming, no cremation, no expensive casket.
