What do you think of new technology

What do you feel about new entertainment technology? I can't afford an HDTV but even if I could I wouldn't want one because they are so wide that the picture has no height. In order for the picture to have height and everything look real short you have to get a big screen tv and some of us prefer just a small tv. I understand why the government is getting rid of traditional broadcast but sooner or later to watch tv I'll have to get an HDTV because the government in the next few years will no longer allow traditional tv broadcasts. BTW, I keep hearing it advertised as "new technology," but in reality HDTV is 1970's technology it's just new to American audiences.

I prefer dvds over tapes but the main reason I decided to post this is that there are rumors that vcrs will no longer be sold in the next few months. From what I understand that's just a rumor and the only thing that's going to happen is movies will no longer be released in vhs format by the end of 2005. I think vcrs have a limited life span now but dvd recorders are expensive and I don't think you can record over something on dvds.

In the past vcrs had three different speeds: sp, lp, ep. New vcrs upset me because I can't find any that record in long play (lp) and that's the speed I prefer to record in.

There is also a moral aspect to this. I think old shows will still be broadcast but I'm concerned how much they will be shown on tv. TV has increasingly become more and more immoral so the fact there are so many old shows on tv has given us ability to watch decent shows. Once only HDTV is broadcast though many stations may decide they only want to broadcast shows that fill up the entire screen and not older shows. That will make the wholesome shows even more rare than they are now.

Because of technology that allows people to record shows without recording the commercials this fall most of the ads will come in the form of product placement and conversations about products than commercials in the commercial breaks. Product placement has been in movies since before tv existed and it's not new to tv (I remember as a kid seeing it done on Alf which was back in the 80's), but a majority of the ads seems extreme.

Last week I was watching NBC and they were showing ads for an ad they apparently broadcast last Monday night. This shows how bad shows on NBC are now-watch our show because you'll like the ad in the commercial break! Ads to advertise ads-that's a scary thought for me.

Just some mindless random thoughts of mine.

The only new technology are the ones that make old technology obsolete. If you're going to come up with new technology, you should at least make them compatible with the old technology. Do you know how many CD-ROMs and CD-RWs I have that don't work anymore ever since I upgraded my computer?

I can live without it.

I agree, the only reason I own a television is because I love to watch animal planet and sometimes the history channel...but most of what the TV channels have to offer is rotten and not of my interest.

Well, some of us will have to revert back to a very old method of entertainment.
R E A D I N G books. Imagine that!

Thank heavens for thrift stores and pawn shops. You can always find an old VCR player there.

I'm fed up with even the commercials on TV. I watch Fox News, History Channel, Court TV and the Sci-Fi channel. I did get into the LOST series which I like very much. I mostly pop in a DVD and watch a movie at night.

We are shopping around for a HDTV, but I don't really like them.

tqpix, I love my computer but it gets so frustrating at times.

Stephania and Ellithidren, I mostly watch news, the history channel and the Tonight Show and the last few weeks Hit Me Baby One More Time. Even that stuff gets bad though because History Channel likes to do "The History of Sex" and similar shows and its amazing how much sex Fox News has. For example when Paris Hilton first did her Carl's jr. ad that was the main news story and even now a month or more later they still frequently find excuses to show that commercial and call it news. Many legitimate news stories are ignored so they can spend time covering Victoria Secret or similar stuff.

The only s*x you'll find in animal planet is that of animals, and it's quite interesting to watch considering it's only for breeding purposes.;)
But you're right, television has gone so far with it that it makes me wander.."what next?"
Peace,
-Stefania

HDTV’s and movie theater screens are wide because the human field of vision is wide. We look left to right more than we do up and down. Also, I am certain that HDTV down converters will become very popular when analog broadcast cease. These gismos let you watch HDTV signals on a standard TV. You’re also right about the HDTV standard being around for a long time. However, it has only recently become affordable enough for the average consumer.

They didn't stop showing old black and white shows just because TVs went to color. I doubt old low-def shows will disappear.
