• Starting today August 7th, 2024, in order to post in the Married Couples, Courting Couples, or Singles forums, you will not be allowed to post if you have your Marital status designated as private. Announcements will be made in the respective forums as well but please note that if yours is currently listed as Private, you will need to submit a ticket in the Support Area to have yours changed.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

I just found myself wondering what everyone in this forum does for a living. A lot of posts seem very well informed, so... Are you a student? A professional scientist? Or is science more of a hobby? What field are you in? What are your special interests?

To start off: I'm a 3rd year student of medicine. Special interests: neuroscience, especially circuits and motor control.

I don't quite know the finer points, but I would definitely like to work in some type of biology field. If I went into medicine, I would probably go into oncology or neurology. If I instead became a scientist, I would probably go into genetics, virology, or neuroscience.

I'm currently a PhD student environmental epidemiology. I did an Msc environmental health sciences and Msc epidemiology. Prior working experience before starting a PhD was also in environmental epi and (completely unrelated) software development.

I'm a statistical geneticist (originally an experimental physicist). I do mostly human genetics and some malaria, with a little dabbling in rotifers at the moment. I've spent a fair bit of time on models of human genetic history and on the genetics of natural selection, and on methods to detect episodes of selection.

(At the moment I'm at the annual Cold Spring Harbor "Biology of Genomes" conference. Svante Paabo gave a talk during the evolution session this evening about the sequencing of the Neandertal genome, but he didn't actually report many new conclusions. One tidbit that I'd heard before: Neandertals had lower genetic diversity than modern humans, and therefore probably had quite a small population size. Oh, and the claim has been made that there are upwards of 5000 RNA genes in the human genome, which would mean that at least 20% of all genes are not protein-coding.)

I have a Bsc in a study focused on the medical side of all the exact sciences (best way to explain it...)

Currently doing a Msc in what can best be described as Molecular Biophysics... knowing how life works at the molecular scale, and preferable by doing experiments involving lasers.

Lasers, is there anything they can't do?

I am a Chief Geophysicist for an geophysical exploration company. At the moment I am shooting 2D seismic with a new 2 component cable in the Arafura Sea between Indonesia and Australia.

My background - other than my industrial geophysical work - is a BSc in Geology and a Masters in micropalaeontology specialising in palynofacies - the study of the organic debris in rocks, especially oil source rocks.

My other area of interest is in PreCambrian and Cambrian evolutionary palaeontology.

Biology student, 3rd year.

What are your special interests?

Lazing around, debating on internet fora, enjoying life... basically anything that doesn't involve reading huge, dry biology textbooks.

Peter :)

I'm a law student. I don't have a lot of real science education, but I took quite a few science classes in undergrad and I read a ton of random science books. I've often thought that I made a mistake and I should have gone into physics or astronomy, but hey, law's good too.

Very interesting to see what everyone's background is!
