Political speeches?
Politicians and government leaders telling us that it is ok to do what we are doing, as long as we vote for them. They will fix everything.

Scientific lectures?
Scientists assuring us that they will discover the answers that will solve all our problems, if we just fund their research.

Religious sermons?
That point out that we are sinners and that we must change our behavior and our thinking if we are to obtain the health and prosperity that we desire.

I'll tell ya what we need. More people like this:

Mark 12:41-44 NIV

41 Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts. 42 But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a few cents.

43 Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. 44 They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything—all she had to live on.”

Of course not

Scientific lectures?

In some limited, moral, and genuinely helpful circumstances, perhaps

Religious sermons?
That point out that we are sinners and that we must change our behavior and our thinking if we are to obtain the health and prosperity that the others promise.

Only to the point where the majority of Christians remember sin, hell, and conscience. This shouldn't be in the public square though. This should be at one's Church.

So, none of those things, obviously. The only thing I can think of that we all need, and plenty of......is Jesus Christ. His Gospels applied to our lives. Individual responsibility and honesty. Prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. Apart from Jesus, there is nothing much available to mankind, that we could say we need more of. Love? Jesus IS love. Truth? Jesus IS truth. Justice? Jesus IS Justice.

Jesus says three things which changed my life forever and completely (He said much much more, as well), but I thought these three really applied to your observation here:

Matthew 11:28 Come to me, all you that labour and are burdened; I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon yourselves, and learn from me; I am gentle and humble of heart; and you shall find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

John 14:27 Peace is my bequest to you, and the peace which I will give you is mine to give; I do not give peace as the world gives it. Do not let your heart be distressed, or play the coward.

John 11:25 Jesus said to her, I am the resurrection and life; he who believes in me, though he is dead, will live on, 26 and whoever has life, and has faith in me, to all eternity cannot die.

Are you saying that morality, as taught by science, belongs in the public square, but morality as taught in churches doesn't? And isn't it the goal of religious morality that it be manifested in the public square?

Well we need more science funding. We also need better ideas, and implementation of those ideas.

We need to implement the good ideas that we already have. Science has a tendency to keep looking for yet better ideas, something like " the 'good' being held hostage by the 'perfect'", or, why use a cheap, simple solution when we can create an expensive, complicated one. ^_^

No. Just too quick on the typing. I sometimes get worked up and type in a stream of consciousness sort of way.

Thank you for the opportunity to clarify. I think this came up in another post too. I DO think Christianity should be the "go to" source for anything regarding faith and morality.

What we definitely don´t need is persons who pretend that our options are limited to three poor ones.

For the vast majority those are the options regarding our national problems. Your observation places you in a very small minority. :D

Political and religious lectures/sermons accomplish (almost?) nothing.

Science has demonstrably improved our lives in so many ways, from modern medicine, to travel, to communication, to education, and on and on.

So obviously more science!

If we could rid science of politics and religion (faith in/of science) we could probably make some progress.
