Actually Rick Warren takes no money from the sale of any of his PDL stuff, any profits from those sales go to charitable organizations. The only salary he gets is what his church pays him.

I actually thought it was the other way around - he takes no salary from Saddleback, Inc. - just lives on his pdl $$$. Many of the discount stores are selling the book for $5 so don't pay any $10-$20 for it.

I've been on the unexcited fringes of PDL 4 times and I'm sick to death of it. It's pablum and it's all about me, me, me - making me feel good, making me feel useful, making sure that I understand that I'm the center of God's universe. Yeah, right. Didn't sit well the first 1/3 time and still doesn't. I've never had the patience to go through the whole thing. Actually sold my book at the church yard sale last weekend!

My pastor thought so much of it he went through it again in Jan/Feb - I skipped church and found a Messianic congregation instead where I'm fed by the Bible and not by the latest fad. btw, my pastor has preached some pretty awful messages lately and he used to be one of the best. But he's preaching other peoples stuff, not his own.

Read it. Hated it.

I would put it up there (or, I guess, down there) with "Ragamuffin Gospel" on the "why do Christians keep falling for this crap" list.

Sigh, welcome to 21st century Christianity, Barb.

Everytime one of these dopey pop-Christianity books or motivational speakers masquerading as preachers pops up, all I can think of is, "well, it won't be long, now!"

We're basically seeing pretty much what Jesus said would happen before He comes back.

Thanks guys for all your replies. It helping me realise i'm not the only one struggling. You I was attending a pentecostal church where I got saved and enjoyed it for a time. But as the church grew the pastor started to becom quite heavy in the preaching of ministry and works (in my opinion.) They'd been running freedom in christ course previous. Alot of things went on and I felt it was time to leave. Me and some of the youth went to a free church. It's more of a gentle way of church life. People still get involved with ministry but theres no pressure.
2 months after I left my first church I was asked if I wanted to attend the 40 days of purpose. I started to go and found it good, but very intense. At the time I was going through very bad circumstances too. I'd just lost my job, not long moved churches. When I started reading the daily book I found it very difficult. It was as if every time I read it even tho I felt what was being said was right it felt so heavy and stress full.

That's exactly where I saw a red flag myself. Heaviness, ugh!

Jesus's encouragement in Matt. 11 might leave us feeling a little differently.

25 At that time Jesus said, I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children.

26 Yes, Father, for this was your good pleasure.
27 All things have been committed to me by my Father. No-one knows the Son except the Father, and no-one knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.
28 Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.
29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.

God bless, love Sue

I feel the same way Sue. If you felt that way and the 2nd time around you felt the same, that should confirm something. I think there is too much manmade stuff interwoven with scripture in there.

God made man!!!
Jesus came to earth as a man...
God uses man to work through!!

I watched a teaching last night by Rick Warren and it had me in tears.. He is teaching love.. faith worketh by love.. but also works.. because faith without works is dead..

quite heavy in the preaching of ministry and works

We are to give our whole lives to the service of Jesus.. and that is heavy going.. We are to deny ourselves, take up our cross and follow Him..

Hard yes but as Sue writes.. we do find rest for our souls... heavy going yes.. and challenging to say the least.. But God gives us all we need..

I want to be pushed out of my comfort zone.. even if it is not easy on the flesh..
