Quick mention--everyone here is of course aware that Protestan England hunted Roman Catholic priests and had them put to death simply for being Catholic, right? It's almost like men are sinner, or something...who woulda thunk?

If OP is still reading this, what period of English history are you looking at? The relevant differences will change based on what part you're looking at. And of course, pre-Reformation English Church History is an entirely different boat. There, you get to talk about Celtic Monks, St. Bede, and a King called Oswy.

On the issue of salvation there seems to be two thoughts. The World Almanac says that Catholics believe that salvation is by grace faith PLUS works and MOST Protestants believe in salvation is by grace and faith alone.

I read somewhere that one of the main scriptures for Martin Luther’s break from the Catholic Church was Ephesians 2:8-9 (see below) because it supports the protestant view that salvation is by grace and faith alone

Ephesians 2
8For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
9Not of works, lest any man should boast.

Another verse that addresses salvation without confusion is Romans 10:9-10 (see below)

Romans 10
9 If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.

For me salvation is the main issue and I see both Catholics and Protestants as obtaining salvation based on the scriptures above.

I know there are differences in Catholics and Protestants but as far as being brothers and sisters in Christ they are the same.

Protestants, Eastern Orthodox, and Catholics should not waste too much time fighting about minor issues. Instead we Christians should join together to oppose the more dangerous beliefs that threaten our society.

Read "abc to eternal life" on google and give it to others.

Westerners were 1000 years orthodox, 500 years Romano Catholics and 500 years protestants.

protestantism is Orthodoxy with huge holes. They renounced food for eternal life, confessions. The ancestors of westerners will feeel outraged by protestantism and at home at orthodox Church.

If eternal life is important then you want food for eternal life and Eastern Orthodox is your name.

Sick angel protested and is in big trouble....The problem is that protestantism is not return to orthodoxy is a TOTALLY NEW Religion, a part o Christianity . If you love Part of Truth, the Whole Truth, Orthodoxy will make you very happy.

Tell me, how does Lutheranism (the oldest and largest Protestant group) clearly does that.

Thanks!

There is no Protestant or catholic in Gods kingdom. The church is comprised of all beleivers but not all walk in the spirit. Christainty is a mixed bag of beliefs but the Lord knows who his bride is and he will bring them out on that day. Many have already left the valley of confusion and are now just followers of Christ

There are three expressions that mark the difference between the Roman Catholic Church (RCC) and Protestant Theology, Christ alone, faith alone and Scripture alone. Rome has long believed itself to be the true Church and all that are outside are lost. Don't get me wrong, at it's core the RCC is profoundly Christian but it's what they add to the Gospel that Protestants, well.....protest. The most important point of departure is justification by grace through faith alone.

Grace not only saves us but sanctifies us, apart from Christ we can do nothing and to make myself clear, your merit counts for nothing. If one were to ask the Apostle Paul how it is that he worked so hard and suffered so much and bringing so many the Gospel, he would, and did, tell us that it is by grace.

But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace to me was not without effect. No, I worked harder than all of them—yet not I, but the grace of God that was with me. (I Cor. 15:10)

A good working definition for grace is 'unmerited favor', Paul worked in the ministry field by grace alone and he is crystal clear on this point. The merits of Christian ministry are Christ's alone we can add nothing. James in speaking to believers who were obviously showing favoritism was simply telling them that this is not how saving faith works. He was outraged that a wealthy Christian could teach a poor Christian as inferior when they themselves apart from Christ are poor, pitiful, blind and naked.

The RCC believes in grace as well, but not grace through faith alone.

That's my take on it.

Grace and peace,
Mark

The Roman Catholic Catechism says that Muslims are saved (whereas Protestants would say Muslims are not saved)...

Some context is in order here:

"839 "Those who have not yet received the Gospel are related to the People of God in various ways."325

The relationship of the Church with the Jewish People. When she delves into her own mystery, the Church, the People of God in the New Covenant, discovers her link with the Jewish People,326 "the first to hear the Word of God."327 The Jewish faith, unlike other non-Christian religions, is already a response to God's revelation in the Old Covenant. To the Jews "belong the sonship, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the worship, and the promises; to them belong the patriarchs, and of their race, according to the flesh, is the Christ",328 "for the gifts and the call of God are irrevocable."329

840 And when one considers the future, God's People of the Old Covenant and the new People of God tend towards similar goals: expectation of the coming (or the return) of the Messiah. But one awaits the return of the Messiah who died and rose from the dead and is recognized as Lord and Son of God; the other awaits the coming of a Messiah, whose features remain hidden till the end of time; and the latter waiting is accompanied by the drama of not knowing or of misunderstanding Christ Jesus.

841 The Church's relationship with the Muslims. "The plan of salvation also includes those who acknowledge the Creator, in the first place amongst whom are the Muslims; these profess to hold the faith of Abraham, and together with us they adore the one, merciful God, mankind's judge on the last day."330

842 The Church's bond with non-Christian religions is in the first place the common origin and end of the human race:

All nations form but one community. This is so because all stem from the one stock which God created to people the entire earth, and also because all share a common destiny, namely God. His providence, evident goodness, and saving designs extend to all against the day when the elect are gathered together in the holy city. . .331

843 The Catholic Church recognizes in other religions that search, among shadows and images, for the God who is unknown yet near since he gives life and breath and all things and wants all men to be saved. Thus, the Church considers all goodness and truth found in these religions as "a preparation for the Gospel and given by him who enlightens all men that they may at length have life."332

844 In their religious behavior, however, men also display the limits and errors that disfigure the image of God in them:

Very often, deceived by the Evil One, men have become vain in their reasonings, and have exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and served the creature rather than the Creator. Or else, living and dying in this world without God, they are exposed to ultimate despair.333

845 To reunite all his children, scattered and led astray by sin, the Father willed to call the whole of humanity together into his Son's Church. The Church is the place where humanity must rediscover its unity and salvation. The Church is "the world reconciled." She is that bark which "in the full sail of the Lord's cross, by the breath of the Holy Spirit, navigates safely in this world." According to another image dear to the Church Fathers, she is prefigured by Noah's ark, which alone saves from the flood.334

846 How are we to understand this affirmation, often repeated by the Church Fathers?335 Re-formulated positively, it means that all salvation comes from Christ the Head through the Church which is his Body:

Basing itself on Scripture and Tradition, the Council teaches that the Church, a pilgrim now on earth, is necessary for salvation: the one Christ is the mediator and the way of salvation; he is present to us in his body which is the Church. He himself explicitly asserted the necessity of faith and Baptism, and thereby affirmed at the same time the necessity of the Church which men enter through Baptism as through a door. Hence they could not be saved who, knowing that the Catholic Church was founded as necessary by God through Christ, would refuse either to enter it or to remain in it.336

847 This affirmation is not aimed at those who, through no fault of their own, do not know Christ and his Church:

Those who, through no fault of their own, do not know the Gospel of Christ or his Church, but who nevertheless seek God with a sincere heart, and, moved by grace, try in their actions to do his will as they know it through the dictates of their conscience - those too may achieve eternal salvation.337

848 "Although in ways known to himself God can lead those who, through no fault of their own, are ignorant of the Gospel, to that faith without which it is impossible to please him, the Church still has the obligation and also the sacred right to evangelize all men."338
"

In other words, salvation is found only in Christ, who dispenses this salvation through His Body, the Church, by His grace in His Sacraments (et al); however the CCC points out that it is entirely possible for God to save outside of this, specifically when and where people have never heard of Christ or the Gospel. The point here, it would seem, is to indicate God's kindness, grace and justice while emphasizing that Christ alone is the Way, the Truth and the Life.

To that end actually many Protestants would be in absolute agreement, claiming the particularity of Christ and the salvation found in Him and Him only while maintaining that it is not possible for us to say who God can and cannot save simply because they have not heard the Gospel or explicitly confessed the Christian faith.

Saying that God's grace is far bigger than we are able to fathom is no controversial statement. The same has been said throughout Christian history by orthodox and godly theologians across the board.

The Roman Catholic Catechism says that Muslims are saved

The Catechism does not say Muslims are saved. They are among Gentiles (i.e. non-Jews). God's "plan of salvation" includes Gentiles. Someone who is a Muslim could be saved if he respond to the grace given him and unite with the one Church founded by Christ. That is different than what you said.

I agree entirely and was quite surprised by that statement.

I'm going to take a wild stab in the dark that you're knowledge of Catholicism comes from a lot of "I heard this about them" kind of thing.

You'd probably help yourself if you bothered to learn a bit about Catholicism. I say that as a Protestant by the way who has sincere theological disagreements with Catholicism. It's rather amazing how much different my position on Catholicism changed when I actually decided to learn something instead of parrot everything I had heard said about Catholicism.

But you're going to have to actually be willing to learn.

I suggest you stop taking stabs in the dark. I have researched and studied hundreds of hours about the Catholic church. I have attended Catholic churches, I have read Catholic writtings. I have questioned and reasoned with Catholics.

Perhaps you need to spend a few hundred more hours researching and studying then.

One difference is that we believe God is available to ALL of us wherever we are. God is not bound up in some cup at the altar of anybody's church.
the Sacrements are a real way that God gives His grace to His people but God can also work outside the sacrements, I mean He is God afterall
