The God Who Justifies - James R. White
A defense of the doctrine of justfication by Dr. James White. Contrasts the Protestant understanding justification against the Roman Catholic view. - Excellent book.

Death of Death in the Death of Christ - John Owen
An in-depth study of Christ's death, atonement and related topics by one of the foremost of the Puritans. - Very hard to read, recommend condensed version: 'Life by His Death'

Baptism of Disciples Alone - Fred Malone
An apologetic for the Baptist belief of baptizing disciples contrasted with the claims of Paedobaptism from a covenantal (Reformed) perspective. - Good book, defines the views well, offers a foundation for a covenantal view of 'Disciples Only' Baptism. I don't agree with everything said, but Malone makes some great points.

Debating Calvinism - Dave Hunt & James White
Ungh... a debate book. Since Hunt wrote "What Love is This", Dr. White has challenged Hunt to an open debate on the subject of Calvinism. Hunt agreed and this book is the result. Being a Calvinist, I'm quite partial to White's exegesis and find Hunt's lack of coherent thought and the constant strawman arguments to be frustrating. - Might help some understand the issues involved in the debate and the tactics of the two views.
Easy Chairs, Hard Words - Douglas Wilson
Written prior to Pastor Wilson's plunge into some new, controversial ideas, this book is a layman's guide to understanding the "doctrines of grace" of the theological viewpoint known as Calvinism. - Very easy to read and brings out some of the best arguments.

God at Work:Your Christian Vocation in All of Life - Gene Edward, Jr. Veith
A perspective on how God uses all our vocations to His glory. From a Lutheran perspective, but applicable to all evangelicals. Quite good theologically.
Whatever Happened to the Gospel of Grace? - James M. Boice
An EXCELLENT book on the abandonment of historical Protestant beliefs for more 'culturally relevant' beliefs and methods. A good primer on Calvinism and its impact in preaching and faith.
Romans, Galatians, Hebrews, John, Ephesians, Matthew, Ezekiel, Psalms... (of course, the best!)

I've read some other stuff... these are some of the most memorable for me.

I have just finished a book about Catholicism not too long ago that was really good. It is called, "This is the Faith: A Complete Explanation of the Catholic Faith" by Canon Francis Ripley. It is a very good thorough explanation of Catholicism for those who don't know much about it. But I'd be careful because some of it is only opinion and not official Catholic doctrine but most if not all of it is considered to be orthodox.

I am currently reading a book of the Liberal Christian variety called "Living in Sin? A Bishop Rethinks Human Sexuality" by Bishop Shelby Spong. I also have another book that I have read a couple of chapters out of that is interesting. It is called "Stealing Jesus: How Fundamentalism Betrays Christianity" by Bruce Bawer. I have another book that is pretty small that I got from RBC Ministries (producer of the "Our Daily Bread" devotionals) that you all might like called "Jesus Who Is This Man Who Says He's God?" I am guessing it has no author but it is published by Discovery House Publishers if you want to look it up. :)

Look on the title page does it have a Nihil Obstat and an Imprimature? If it does it will be free from all moral & doctrinal error though it will contain opinions no doubt but they wont or should not contradict if they have that.

I would throw that book in the trash as Spong will lead you astray dear.

Yes, it has both a Nihil Obstat and an Imprimatur. The local priest recommended it to me when I was studying Catholicism in preparation for baptism and confirmation. I have since changed my mind and decided not to convert to Catholicism. :)

Well, that is your opinion and you are definitely entitled to it. :) However, this is my first Spong book that I have ever tried reading. I intend to read the whole thing. It isn't very big. About 200 pages I believe. I am actually very intrigued by it and since sexuality and sexual morals is something that I am very interested in, I decided to read this book. :)

Yes, I've read your reason in your profile. I would caution you as would 99% of your brethren here to not let your itchy ears hear what they want to hear, and don't be decieved by the trickery of your flesh for it is waging a war against God (Galations 5:17). It is an earnest prayer of mine for you.

2Ti 4:3 For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions,
2Ti 4:4 and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths.

Spong is a teacher of falsehood, dont become his disciple.

In Christ,
Bro. Mark

The Way of the Pilgrim and The Pilgrim Continues His Way both translated from the Russian by RM French.

Anyone else ever read these and/or ever heard of the Philokalia?

Yeah they're good books (my tranlslation of the "Pilgrim" books are by Helen Bacovcin). The Pilokalia is an enormous volume of writings from Eastern Church Fathers on spirituality. I read some of it and it is pretty intense and can be difficult to navigate through without some help from someone versed in Orthodox spiritual practice.

As for me I am recommending Mere Christianity and The Screwtape Letters by CS Lewis. I really liked The Screwtape Letters it puts things in a different perspective.
