What are people doing for Lent?

Prayer, fasting, alms. Justice to God, justice to self, justice to others.

Daily prayer and...

...perhaps giving up meats. The money I save by eating beans could be donated.

Another thought is to get back into my fitness and weight loss program. I could give up many calories per day and volunteer to walk rescued dogs.

Maybe I'll stop driving my car and take the bus to work. The commute would be a good time to read.

I'm not sure what would be best.

Prayer, fasting, alms.

At the moment, my plan is to say Compline every night before bed and I've decided to give up red meat and poultry as well (which I usually eat a lot of). I haven't worked out the alms bit yet but the money saved will help my family funds, which are ridiculously low at the moment.

I think this seems like a good test of my self control against excess and I really need to pray more regularly, so this will help at lot in that respect.

This year i'll be spending most of Lent in West Africa with a whole load of Bible mockers, so it shall be rather fun to say the least.

Like everyone else i'll be fasting, spending extra hours focusing on the Lord and His word, and some other things that shan't be discussed just because i'm trying to work out what will be logistically possible whilst out in the field. Most definitely going to try the daily acts of generosity (slightly inspired by Love Life Live Lent). I already try to do random acts of kindness each day, but with it being Lent there's simply no excuse not to make it a daily event eh.

Good thread! I'm off for something hard for lent, I'm off vegan! I've been in touch with and Eastern Orthodox priest, who used to be an Anglican priest somewhere in Kent. We know each other well. I wanted to gain a stronger spiritual discipline over lent, so I asked him to suggest to me a suitable fast. He suggested :
Fasting:
1. Do what you can not what you cannot.
2. You need to stay clear of all animal products except shellfish. So no meat or dairy or eggs but you can have prawns or cockles.

4. Add to your prayers the prayer of St Ephraim the Syrian. http://www.orthodox.net/greatlent/of-ephraim-the-syrian.pdf
5. Fasting , prayer and Almsgiving all go together - so find a charity and raise money for it.

I'm also going to be a little bit tougher on my prayers, I think I've become too lazy recently and lent is a perfect way to regain what is lost!

Well, I'd thought of giving up an addictive habit that leaves me irritable; getting it out of my life would certainly enhance my spiritual growth.

But I'd miss CF.

LOL Polycarp. A good friend is a Lutheran minister and a Facebook fiend. He has joined an online movement for Lent that suggests praying before every post. That would certainly keep me from posting half of what I do... or more.

Strange. The only gin worth drinking is Plymouth anyway.

For me, I'm going to start with the evening Ash Wednesday service and contemplate as to what I should do. Recently, a dear friend gave me a Catholic rosary which I've never prayed with before; it might be something I would try during Lent.

that's epic.. I initially decided to give up Bowmore scotch ... and when I couldn't explain why just Bowmore without getting strange looks, I opted for a dry Lent.

I made a list which includes the following:
1. I have talked about cleaning out the garage for five years: this year, I'm actually going to clean out the garage; and while I'm at it I'll go through the books on my bookshelves, get rid of the ones I have no intention using and donate them; and do the same with the clothes in my closet.
2. I'm going to memorize the "Gloria in excelsis" and the "Credo" in both English and Latin.
3. The BIG project: learn, memorize and perform Liszt's "Annèes de Pélerinage, Book III". The third book of Annees are a spiritual pilgrimage which Liszt undertook in the 1860s and 1870s: these are not the big, splashy Liszt pieces with which we are familiar but very inward-looking (and harmonically very advanced) later pieces which he wrote in his old age.

That's a huge list, Uber. My prayers and support is with you.

I have a list, too. I'm back on the weight loss stage of my diet (I've failed at maintenence) so I've given up sugar, grain, starchy vegetables and processed foods. I've started exercising again, too.
