  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Bro. Gabriel, what are services like at your church?

Just a typical slightly contemporary Southern Baptist church.

Somewhat modern worship music mixed with hymns, full orchestra and choir.

Sermon.

Invitation or Altar Call.

Offering.

Announcements/Declarations of Commitments to Salvation, Baptism, or People Joining the Church.

Dismissal/Fellowship.

I grew up in the Presbyterian Church. almost every Presbyterian Service I have attended has generally followed the below:

Choral Introit
Call to Worship
Hymn
Opening Prayer
Responsive reading, normally based on the Psalms
First Scripture Reading
Childrens Sermon
Lord's Prayer
Collection - Choir may sing or Organ music
Apostles Creed
Joys and concerns of the Congregation
Hymn
Pastoral Prayer
Second Scripture Reading
Sermon
Closing Hymn
Benediction.

Most Pastors tie the Scripture readings and the Hymns to the message of the sermon.

not all calvinists are like that. my church is not.
O yes, I know that they're not. This is just the traditional/historical practice of Calvinists. It is something unique to Reformed Churches. My understanding is that this is the way it was done at Geneva and most places until the mid-nineteenth century.

But all of the Calvinist churches that I know of today still stress family/household worship. It may not be in such an archaic fashion as I described; its probably not. I just wanted to explain that family worship has always been an important part of Reformed Church life. The Particular (Reformed) Baptist Church back in my home town is still very much in keeping with the historical model, but they've been around for a while.

He he he......When I just went through this, I got all sorts of free advice on what "Calvin" thought. Be careful of interpertations..they can be very misleading Speaking from experience. I tried to stick with Neutral information, Encyclopedias etc.. Just thought I would interject here.

LOL. It does seem like people have the toughes part with that dreaded "L" "Limited Atonement."
For me, the hardest part was the "I".

Although, I really can't see how you coudl accept only 4 of the points. For the other four to be true "L" would also have to be true, would it not?

I agree with you. Take one point out, and the others don't make much sense.

What would be the point of Christ dying for all if only the elect are the ones who are saved?

Exactly, if Christ made atonement for all, all would be saved. Then we fall into Universalism (which oddly enough, was an off-shoot from Calvinism in the 1700s).

Hi there ,I have been struggling with 'limited atonement' for a number of years, but I am just starting to get back into it,I mean I believed it for years but then I had my doubts

At present I am starting to read John Owen the 'prince of the Puritans'
His book 'The death of Death in the Death of Christ Jesus' wasn't just aimed at 'Arminians' but also at what could be called 'moderate Calvinists'
