  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

What A Treat

The people in Greg’s church were divided. Some of them looked at Halloween as an innocent time where children went from door-to-door in the neighborhood having fun and coming home with enough candy to last a week. Others called it ‘The Night Of The Devil’.

To Greg, Halloween had a different meaning than to anyone else. Each Halloween he thought back to the last time he went trick-or-treating. He almost did not go. After all, he was twelve and some of his friends thought they were too big to go trick-or-treating any more. Finally, Greg decided he would go, and is he ever glad he went, for if it was not for that one last time, he probably would not be a pastor today.

Greg remembers coming home and dumping out his big bag full of goodies eager to see how many of his favorites candies were there, and which ones he would give to his little brother who would eat anything.

Greg remembers how disappointed he was that the biggest treat of all was not even candy. Someone had given him a Bible. Who would do something like that? He took it to his room, not sure what to do with it. He was sure that if he threw it away God would punish him.

The Bible sat on his table for the next several weeks and then on Christmas Eve he decided to pick it up and read The Christmas Story. It took him a while to find it, but find it he did, as he read from the gospel of Luke.

Suddenly, this Christmas Story sounded kind of cool, so he decided to read more. He checked many different books of his Bible, but some of them did not seem as cool as others.

One day he even got brave enough to tell one of his friends what he had been reading and found out this friend actually went to church. This made Greg begin to think. Maybe going to church could be cool, too.

Greg decided to go home and ask him mother if they could go to church, but his mother did not seem to like the idea. Then Greg decided to ask his dad, but got the same answer.

Finally, he came up with an idea that might work. He decided to have his little brother ask their mom about going to church. After all, Greg’s mom always did everything his little brother wanted to do.

His brother was not sure about the idea until Greg explained that it might be worth a couple of candy bars. Greg soon found out that his mother could say “no” to his little brother, too.

But Greg wanted to go to church, so he persisted. Finally, a few months later, his parents relented. After all, they were not against church. They were just in favor of sleeping late.

Soon Greg became involved in the youth group and became close friends with his youth pastor. He began to think about how some day he might want to help some boy. After all, his youth pastor was always there for him.

Years passed, youth group ended and college began, but Greg’s desire for the ministry increased. College led to seminary and seminary led to Greg becoming a youth pastor and then a pastor, and tomorrow night on Halloween Greg will be home handing out Bibles to each child who stops by. After all, some day a church might need a new pastor. ++++

On Halloween some children put on masks and go trick-or-treating, but many people wear masks all year long. If you are one of those people, be willing to take off your mask and become the person God wants you to be.
