What a friend we have in Jesus!It is an unspeakable privilege to be able to carry all our troubles, needs and joys to God in prayer. And, as we do so, we grow and go deeper in our relationship with Him. In 1845 an Irish bride sadly drowned the night before her wedding. Her heartbroken fiance, a man called Joseph Scriven, eventually emigrated to Canada. Sometime later he once again fell in love, but sadly his new fiance contracted pneumonia and she too died before their wedding day. After this double tragedy Joesph Scriven received news that his mother back in Ireland was seriously ill. In an attempt to send comfort accross the ocean. Joseph wrote a poem for her titled "Pray without ceasing". The words were to become one of the best loved hymns.

  1. What a friend we have in Jesus,
    All our sins and griefs to bear!
    What a privilege to carry
    Everything to God in prayer!
    Oh, what peace we often forfeit,
    Oh, what needless pain we bear,
    All because we do not carry
    Everything to God in prayer!
  2. Have we trials and temptations?
    Is there trouble anywhere?
    We should never be discouraged—
    Take it to the Lord in prayer.
    Can we find a friend so faithful,
    Who will all our sorrows share?
    Jesus knows our every weakness;
    Take it to the Lord in prayer.
  3. Are we weak and heavy-laden,
    Cumbered with a load of care?
    Precious Savior, still our refuge—
    Take it to the Lord in prayer.
    Do thy friends despise, forsake thee?
    Take it to the Lord in prayer!
    In His arms He’ll take and shield thee,
    Thou wilt find a solace there.
  4. Blessed Savior, Thou hast promised
    Thou wilt all our burdens bear;
    May we ever, Lord, be bringing
    All to Thee in earnest prayer.
    Soon in glory bright, unclouded,
    There will be no need for prayer—
    Rapture, praise, and endless worship
    Will be our sweet portion there.

The number one key to prayer is to be yourself .When a small child scribbles a work of art or words on a piece of paper and then shows it to their father,he may not always be able to exactly identify the word or what the masterpiece is actually of,but will still proudly put it on display. When we pray either for ourselves or others we may not know exactly what to pray, but we can rest in the fact that, as our reading for today reminds us, our father in heaven does know, understand and, by His spirit, will bring about His good and perfect will in our lives.
