  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Everyone knows that we call the "Uniates" from the Eastern Orthodox Church and the Oriental Orthodox Church, Eastern Catholic Church (or Oriental Catholic Church). Now as for the opposites, there are such thing called "Western Rite Orthodoxy" which is describe those in communion with Eastern Churches, but practicing western liturgies (such as the Anglican Eucharist or the Latin Mass). Now since it is appropriate to call those who join the Eastern Orthodox Church yet retain western liturgies, Western Orthodox Church, would it appropriate to call those who join the Oriental Orthodox Church yet retain western liturgies, Occidental Orthodox Church?

As far as I know, the Oriental Orthodox church doesnt use any Western Rites. Their primary liturgy is St. Basil's.

Don't the Copts, the Syrians, and the Armenians all have different liturgical rites?

Also, I read somewhere that the Western Rite used something like Sarum Rite, Celtic Rite, and/or Gallic Rite, for their liturgies. I think the British Orthodox Church used Sarum Rite, but I'm not sure.

A.W.N. Pugin attempted to revive the Sarum Rite in the Roman Catholic Church in England in the 1830's and 1840's but was rejected by the curch hierarchy. Since there has been no known interst in that rite in England or the British Empire.

True, but I'm speaking of the movement led not by Britons, but by the Papacy of Alexandria (OO) and the Patriarchate of Moscow (EO).

I apologize for not understading your question.

Oh don't considering it is valid since those outdated liturgical rites may be getting a revival. However, this is about how the Orthodoxy is dealing with it.

I think maybe it wouldn't be, though it is the sort of question with no definite answer.

My reasoning is that even when these groups are using those western liturgical rites, or are located in the west, they are still under the authority of Eastern patriarchs.

Under a western patriarch, with a western liturgy, in the west - it might make sense to call it Occidental Orthodox. Though I suspect people would find it confusing.

Sorry for the ridiculously confusing premise everyone. I was intending this section for a general discussion thread about those who were members of Western Christianity converting to Eastern Christianity.

Ah :)

FWIW, my main 'take' on the proposition and why it doesn't seem to work well is that the Eastern jurisdictions seem always to want their Western rite branches to function in that way only until the members can get beyond their non-EO ways. Something like the RCC's Anglican Ordinariate. Then they need to start talking like, and worshipping like, everyone else in whatever jurisdiction it may be. Or so I've been told. I've never been in the situation personally.

It's a funny thing to talk about in a way, since historically as they understand it, Orthodoxy included Western approaches, but now it doesn't. So what are Westerners who convert to Orthodoxy?

I think many struggle with that problem, and I am not sure that the OC has given people a very good answer.
