  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Baptiste was on his way to his job in Manhattan on Sunday when police say 21-year-old Deshaun Smith came up behind him and suddenly slugged him in the back of the head.

Deshaun then allegedly shoved Baptiste onto the tracks and ran off. Cops caught up with him and charged him with assault Monday.

He’s now being held at Rikers Island on $20,000 cash bail, court officials said.

The assault at the 149th Street 4-train station is just one in a recent rash of transit attacks.

The photo caption does say that Deshaun asserts he punched Baptiste in self-defense. But whether he is convicted of anything or not, I really think Adams and other Democrat mayors need to go back to what has worked for crime control in the past. I know it's not woke.

What was working before?

I like the idea of building more homeless shelters and providing more care for the mentally ill. I don't know if those improvements would have prevented this incident, but I'm sure those things are needed if they are living in the subway.

New York City was terrible for crime, what was implemented was starting earlier on the criminals, dealing with smaller things like graffiti in the subway trains and jumping over the turnstiles to get on the subway. Mayor Guiliani The implemented an attitude of expectation. And of course that should also be in the schools, Joe Clark was extremely effective in taking arguably the worst high school in New York City and reforming it. Changing the expectation, just the opposite of today's schools. For drunk driving they would seize vehicles, and the people would have to show up in civil court and explain why they should get their car back. You get them early on their first offense, demonstrate there are consequences. And the mayor focused the police department more on crime prevention instead of how may arrests they made. They looked at the statistics, what crimes were rising, and the commanders would discuss what could be done. They also looked at complaints about police, see what they were about, and focused on improving.
