  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Do you think there will be more participation if this is posted in here?

I hope so
I do too - it gets buried in the halakah thread

"...'But the Egyptians treated us badly; they oppressed us and imposed harsh slavery on us. So we cried out to Hashem, the G-d of our ancestors. Hashem heard us and saw our misery, toil and oppression; and Hashem brought us out of Egypt with a strong hand and a stretched-out arm, with great terror, and with signs and wonders. Now he has brought us to this place and given us this land, a land flowing with milk and honey. Therefore, as you see, I have now brought the firstfruits of the land which you, Hashem, have given me.' You are then to put the basket down before Hashem your G-d, prostrate yourself before Hashem your G-d, and take joy in all the good that Hashem your G-d has given you, your household, the Levi and the foreigner living with you." (Deuteronony 26:6-11. CJB version). This weeks Torah portion deals with two main points. First it starts out by telling us that we must have an attitude of gratitude when dealing with G-d. G-d's reminding Israel about something very important here. He's saying; 'Look, remember where you came from! Remember Egypt, the bondage, the hard labour, the afflictions and the oppression, so that when you enter into the land of promise you will not forget to be grateful.'

There's good reasoning behind remembering where we came from. You see it's not difficult to remember G-d when the chips are down, when we need help and there's no one else to turn to. I bet there aren't many atheists on a battlefield, especially when they're laying in the mud and the bullets are whizzing by all around them. It's great to remember G-d then and it's important of course, but that's not the only time G-d wants our remembrances. He wants us to remember Him also in times of plenty, when we're on vacation sunning ourselves and enjoying all the good things of life. He wants us to remember Him when the cash is flowing in and our stocks are splitting. I give you as an example tithing.

It's much easier to give 10% of $100.00 then it is to give 10% of $100,000.00. But that's when G-d wants us to appreciate Him the most, when the big cheque arrives. He doesn't want us to forget Him just because things are going well for us.

This Parasha also has great spiritual significance to us as Messianic believers. G-d wants us to remember and appreciate what Yeshua has done for us, the price He paid for us through His incarnation and death on the tree.

Therefore every time we bring a gift to G-d through our tithes and offerings, we are to remember where we came from, where we were and how far along He has brought. We are to be appreciative, not before we give our gift, but after we have given it. That's because we're not to give our gift in appreciation thinking, 'Thank you G-d you've blessed me this week now here's your cut.'

But we are to give because He commanded us to give then after we have given we are to appreciate what He has done for us.

The second point of the Parasha deals with blessings and curses. Simply put it says obedience will bring blessings but disobedience will bring curses. The scriptures I want to discuss are:

"16. Today Hashem your G-d orders you to obey these laws and rulings. Therefore you are to observe and obey them with all your heart and all your being. 17. You are agreeing today that Hashem is your G-d and that you will follow His ways; observe His laws, mitzvot and rulings; and do what He says. 18. In turn Hashem is agreeing today that you are His own unique treasure, as He promised you; that you are to observe all His mitzvot;" (Deuteronony 26:16-19. CJB version).

Take note of the beginning of each verse: Vs. 16 "Today." Vs. 17 "...agreeing today." Vs. 18 "...agreeing today." You see, there are no yesterdays, no tomorrow's when it comes to following the commandments of the Lord, only today's. If you were obedient yesterday but your not obedient today, it doesn't cut it. If your not obedient today but you will be obedient tomorrow, it's not going to get you off the hook. It's today that counts with God, what are you doing today, because tomorrow it may be too late.

So what's the benefits of being obedient today?

19. and that He will raise you above all the nations he has made, in praise, reputation and glory; and that, as He said, you will be a holy people for Hashem your G-d." (Deuteronony 26:16-19. CJB version).

The children and I are taking a small portion daily during our schooling, first thing. Has anone else seen the "Walk" Torah series ("Walk Genesis", "Walk Exodus" etc.)? Between that and the "Gateways to Torah" book, I am really finding a lot of good food for discussion -- and i keep getting sidetracked on little points I want to make with my children... so I am having trouble getting through even the short readings for each day! OH well. LOL. So I haven't had a chance to get too far into this parsha, but am looking forward to as the week goes onward.

anyone else notice that there are 4-5 times as many curses for disobedience as there are blessings for obedience?? and yet the vast majority of Christians only read or aknowledge the blessings (which aren't for them anyhow)?
