  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hi there guys!

As some of you maybe know, Sacha St. Francis is my wife...and we have great news:
We are pregnant! It's our first one and we are just overjoyed!  :D etc...
We are now at 22 days after conception, (5 weeks according the natal calendar...) and the little heat has begun beating....according to our books.
Our due date is September 17th. I'm grinning like never before!

Please pray that all goes well with the pregnancy and delivery.

I do have a question:

Does the 1 hour fast before Mass pertain to a pregnant woman?

I know they make exceptions for medical reasons, but is pregnancy enough of a reason?
What with the dizzy spells and all? What if we hurt the baby because of the fast?

Thanks.

Peace in Christ.

St. Joe.

That is wonderful! Talk to your priest about the fast, but I do know that priests will make exceptions for medical reasons (I'm fairly certain that pregnancy counts!).

Congrats my brother! My wife has a great devotion to St. Gerard, the patron of expectant mothers. We are praying for you both. Here is a prayer to him.

O Great St. Gerard, beloved servant of Jesus Christ, perfect imitator of thy meek and humble Saviour, and devoted Child of the Mother of God: enkindle within my heart one spark of that Heavenly fire of charity which glowed in thee and made thee a seraph of love. O glorious St. Gerard, because when falsely accused of crime, thou didst bear, like thy Divine Master, without murmur or complaint, the calumnies of wicked men, thou hast been raised up by God as the Patron and Protector of expectant mothers. Preserve me from danger and from the excessive pains accompanying childbirth, and shield the child which I now carry, that it may see the light of day and receive the lustrial waters of baptism, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen

Congratulations!

The Eucharistic fast is currently one hour before receiving Communion, however, medicine and water may be taken. Those who are ill are excused.
Can. 919 §1 Whoever is to receive the blessed Eucharist is to abstain for at least one hour before holy communion from all food and drink, with the sole exception of water and medicine.

§2 A priest who, on the same day, celebrates the blessed Eucharist twice or three times may consume something before the second or third celebration, even though there is not an hour's interval.

§3 The elderly and those who are suffering from some illness, as well as those who care for them, may receive the blessed Eucharist even if within the preceding hour they have consumed something.

According to the theological norms for the interpretation of Canon Law, your wife would be excused from the fast by reason of any possible physical consequence fasting might cause, even it it were mild.

Your parish priest can confirm that for you. Normally, with this type of canonical (prescription or proscription), common sense usually indicates the proper understanding of the canon. From the theological norms, you are free to follow what you think reason directs you to do until you have had a chance to consult a priest.
