  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

No free legal advice, unless it involves a really good story ...lol!

So, one time my senior year of high school my friends and I were driving back from a movie around 11pm. Anyway, we're stopped at a light and jamming out to a song, and a cop pulls up to the light on the right of us (it was the left turn lane's turn). Within a second or two, our light turns green and we go. We pass the cop and he immediately turns right and flashes his lights. He claimed we were speeding, and asked us to step out of the car while he illegally searched my friends car and all of us before writing my friend a warning for speeding (which was physically impossible to do from the time he saw us to the time he pulled us over).

Sounds like a bogus stop to me. Police cursers do have certified speedometers, so if you pass them and they claim they are driving the speed limit, it can be the basis for the stop. In reality though, that sounds like what we call a "pre-text" stop, just to see what is going on in the car. The officer doesn't even need to have probable cause to write a warning. The stop though, was probably in bad faith. Great story, btw!

It was absolutely a pretextual stop, there was no probably cause. I'm actually a criminal justice minor so I've studied what constitutes (or should constitute) probable cause. Now if that happened, I would say "I don't consent to searches".

Oh, I wan't refusing to answer. Sorry about that. What is the worst part of being in the legal field? It's actually the same as the best part; the clients. I am a trial lawyer, and work in the civil rights field. There are times that I feel so lucky to have been in a position to really help people who were discriminated against, or were treated badly by those in power. Then, there are the times you are retained to defend people that are simply trying to abuse the system. Unfortunately, you cannot just refuse to represent people, just because you like or dislike their cause. Those make for the best and worst days in the profession.

Not advice, opinion. Opinion seems to fall within the ama perameters...

But I'll try another topic. What was the scariest thing that's ever happened to you?

The scariest moment in my life was when I was taking off on a flight at Charles deGaulle airport in Paris. The Airbus I was on had an engine failure on take-off, just as we were clearing the end of the runway. The plane slammed down and slid across the grass into a field. Nobody was really badly hurt, but it was one of the most terrifying things I have ever experienced.

Gosh, that is awful! How long did it take you to fly again after that?

Luckily for me, I had to be on a flight again that afternoon. So I only had about half a day to process things. Probably a good thing! If I could have thought about it more, I might have taken boat home to the U.S.!

and you do look a little like Katie Perry... at least from your college pic you posted!
