  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Water to Wine
John 2:1-10
And the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee; and the mother of Jesus was there: and both Jesus was called, and his disciples, to the marriage. And when they wanted wine, the mothereof Jesus saith unto him, They have no wine. Jesus saith unto her, Woman, what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come. His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it. And there were set there six waterpots of stone, after the manner of the purifying of the Jews, containing two or three firkinsapiece Jesus saith unto them, Fill the waterpots with water. And they filled them to the brim. And he saith unto them, Draw out now, and bear unto the governor of the feast. And they bear it. When the ruler of the feast had ttastd the water that was made wine, and knew not whence it was: (but the servants which drew the water knew;) the governor of the feast called the bridegroom, And saith unto him, Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine: and when men have well drunk, then that which is worse: but thou hast kept the good wine until now.

THE BREAKDOWN

The water is the word of God. Wine is the revelation of that word. When being filled with the word of God, they received the revelation.................

John 2:1-10
And when they wanted wine(revelation of the word), the mother of Jesus saith unto him, They have no wine.(they have no revelation)
Jesus saith unto her, Woman(woman is the church), what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come. (I have not been crucified and risen from the dead yet)
His mother saith unto the servants(his disciples/followers), Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it.
And there were set there six waterpots of stone(they were earthen vessels, followers),
Jesus saith unto them, Fill the waterpots( the followers) with water(the word). And they filled them up to the brim.(with the word of God)
And he saith unto them, Draw out now, and bear unto the governor(the religious leader) of the feast. And they bare it.(tell the religious leader the water/word you received)
When the governor had tasted the water that was made wine(he received the word and was given revelation of it), and knew not whence it was:(he did not know where the revelation or understanding came from (but the servants(his disciples) which drew the water(which gave the word) knew that Jesus gave the revelation) the governor of the feast called the bridegroom,(Jesus is our bridegroom)
And saith unto him, Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine: and when men have well drunk, then that which is worse: but thou hast kept the good wine until now.
That which was worse was the old testement, The good wine is the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the revelation thereof, which is given last.
Have a blessed day!

James 1979,

When you drink wine you become intoxicated or stimulated by that wine.

Therefore, when you receive revelation of God's word, you are also intoxicated or stimulated by that understanding.

Wine is the revelation, revelation is the wine.

It is the spiritual understanding of the word.

Have a blessed day!

Lisabeth,
This might be just an accounting of Jesus' first miracle and not a parable to be read in a symbolic way. There are things to be drawn from this text, but they don't normally take a symbolic reading of the text to illuminate.
  1. The first would be that Christ's first miracle happened at a wedding, an auspicious blessing on marriage in general. Often John's Gospel uses a single member of a group as a symbol for the whole group.
  2. The second is that it is at the prompting of his mother that he does the miracle, but she does not rebuke her son for not wanting to help. It is said that the bride or groom were probably relatives of Mary and she had travelled to Cana to help with the multiday event. This is why it is a concern of hers that they have ran out of wine. Her gentle "Do whatever he tells you." is used as another example of Mary's humble servitude to God's will.
  3. The large jars of water were probably there to be used to wash people's feet or hands in the ritual Jewish cleansing. One could take this to mean the transformation of the Jewish rituals under the Old Covenant law into the wine used as the blood of the new Covenant.

tz620q,

You have given only your speculation of these scriptures. A possible historical account. Where is the Word to confirm this.

Here is the word which confirms that God speaks in parables and only by the Spirit of Christ in us are we able to understand.

Matthew 13:34-35

All these things spake Jesus into the multitude in parables; and without a parable spake he not unto them:
That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying, I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter things which have been kept secret from the foundation of the world.

Mark 4:11-12

And he said unto them, Unto you it is given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God: but unto them that are without, all these things are done in parables:

That SEEING THEY MAY SEE, AND NOT PERCEIVE; AND HEARING THEY MAY HEAR, AND NOT UNDERSTAND; LEST AT ANY TIME THEY SHOULD BE CONVERTED, AND THEIR SINS SHOULD BE FORGIVEN THEM.

Love,
Lisabeth
