Before Jesus died, he breathed on his disciples and said receive the Holy Spirit.
Pentecost came and the church was empowered to teach and preach the Gospel.
In church history there are plenty of examples of God backing his word by conversions, miracles, inspiration, direction and strengthening by the Spirit.
After the great disappointment, several people received visions and God guided their search for a more complete understanding of what had just happened.
Helen Gould had dreams and visions, she had what is known as word of knowledge, word of wisdom and the gift of prophecy.
God would reveal things that would otherwise remain hidden and she knew where to send her messages of both inspiration and reproof.
In more than 1500 years since the disappearance of the gifts of the Spirit, there is no record of a revival of these gifts, callings and offices.
Its no coincidence that these returned after the great disappointment, It was necessary for the remnant church to be guided, equipped, inspired and strengthened by the Spirit in order to make mission.
Many years ago while I lived in the mountains of Puerto Rico, there was a drought which affected the coffee crop. Without the early rain there would be no flowers to pollinate. Amid the drought we had a freak shower that rained only on our plot, the neighbors received not a drop. Within 24 hours our mountainside was white with coffee flowers. A few months later before the yearly harvest we received another freak rain and the coffee cherries became plump and filled out because of the rain. After that it was then a matter of harvesting the crop.
When you consider that coffee and grapes depend on early and latter rains to produce fruit, you can see why God describes Israel as a vine.
In Isaiah 5 it mentions a vineyard that was planted with choice seed yet at the time of harvest it produced wild grapes. Its a message of judgment.
So what crop is God referring to? It can't be wheat because the seed might grow but farmers are monitoring moisture content in order to have a grain that is thoroughly dry for harvest, otherwise the crop would rot in storage.
So, we can see that God provided the early rain to guarantee that his vine would produce fruit, a process that takes time and depends on the weather.
In 1844 the gifts, callings and the office of prophet were once again present in the church, and God is waiting on his harvest to ripen before the last day's events are concluded.
