FWIW I think @public hermit is correct, it's the center of a left/right dichotomy, (the centrist or moderate view). A left/right dichotomy contains two subjective yet equally valid views, with the objective view at the center. For example, in this case one side could be for natural gas production through fracking, while the other side could be against destroying drinking water due to contamination of the water table when fracking. Good lawmakers can articulate both points of view so that they can find solutions, while a propagandist will play one end against the other.It's a 180 degree turn
