Wait... NFP = Quiverfull?

I know some people here, and elsewhere who think that being Quiverfull is simply not taking birth control pills, or getting sterilized. That if you decide to go the NFP route, you're considered Quiverfull...

Doesn't Quiverfull mean you are open to children at all times and generally not deciding for yourself the set number of children you have, whether it's 2, 6 or 11? NFP is just another form of birth control.

So... why do some people think that NFP means you're Quiverfull? I personally don't think it does, do you?

The "true" definition of Quiverfull is a couple who don't believe in using ANY form of bc, including NFP.

Then there are the looser definitions and the fact that all of us are at different places and have different circumstances to contend with...

But to answer your question, No, if someone uses NFP it does not Automatically mean they're Quiverfull, since the vast majority of Quiverfull couples won't use any form of bc.

That is assuming it is, at that time, safe to conceive. Some (but not all) QF couples will assume the use of contraception while the wife's health might be seriously impacted by a pregnancy. They do this only as long as necessary for recovery from that condition, though.

We immobilize other parts of our bodies during their recovery times. This area should be treated no less thoughtfully.

Nope, NFP does not automatically mean quiverfull.

However, I give advice on how NFP works for me, simply because I use a FAM of non-contraception (if that makes sense). So I know all about my menstrual cycle, signs of fertility etc, not because I have been trying to prevent pregnancy at any point, but just because I like to know about my body, when my fertility returns after having a baby, and because this sort of knowledge can help you conceive (within God's plan of course) with appropriate timing.

So by hanging out here you may think the two are connected, but for me at least it is only in that sense.

Hope that helps!

I would have thought NFP was the opposite of quiverfull, since it is trying to prevent pregnancy.

Well, using it to prevent pg would be, but using the tools gained from knowledge of NFP (like signs of fertility) can help achieve pg instead.

Also, saying you use NFP is a great way to answer the "what sort of bc do you use?" question if you don't feel like explaining QF to those who are unsympathetic.

:sorry:

But using NFP to acheive pregnancy wouldn't be quiverfull either.

Quiverfull doesnt = trying to have as many children as possible.

Quiverfull = letting God decide how many children and when

NFP for preventing or for trying wouldnt be quiverfull technically

QF couple can try to have kids all they want to, but they recognize God as the limiting factor.

hmmm..i guess i see Quiverful differently than you then. To me TRYING to have kids by purposely having sex during certain parts of the cycle is the same as avoiding having kids by not having sex at certain parts of the cycle. Neither is just living your life and having sex when you want to with your spouse and leaving it in God's hands. Both are trying to CONTROL the situation or help it along or avoid it. KWIM?

I know the EFFORT is the same, but the results are different.

If a couple succeeds in keeping there gametes separated, they have effectively taken their fertility off of the altar [Rom. 12:1].

Placing their fertility on the altar as frequently as possible (and asking God to bless it) is welcomed in the Christian walk, apart from the striving aspect. If the couple thinks they will "make" God give them more children that way, they need to rethink their motives. But even with that error in their thinking, they end up spending more time together, which is a good thing.
