First I ever heard of Octoroon. What exactly was that supposed to be? Someone that has eight roons?

They did some elaborate categorizing back then, especially in the south, to figure out exactly who their weird apartheid laws applied to and how. Octoroon was something like youre considered 1/8 of African descent.

Virginia clung to its anti "interracial" marriage laws until 2/3 the way through the 20th c. when the Supreme Court struck them down.

The plaintiffs - well, just the groom - got sentenced to a year in prison for marrying.
