Our cable company is switching to an encrypted, all-digital signal and they were going door-to-door making sure everyone had a box of some type for every TV. They were offering cheap boxes for people with just basic cable, but I already had a DVR and digital cable box on my two TVs.

I asked about a cheaper HD receiver because the regular digital receiver in my bedroom wouldn't put out HD and I didn't want to spend another $15/month for a second DVR on my bedroom TV. The guy actually took my old regular digital cable box back and gave me an old single-tuner DVR that he said would put out HD.

The only issue is that there is no HDMI output on the old (but new to me) DVR. There is component output and I could get component cables, but will that video quality be worth it? I'm kind of disappointed because some information I've read says that component video quality is just as good while other says that HDMI is superior. Was this a good deal? Should I take the box back and forget having HD in my bedroom or would the component cables be best?
