When the newspaper wasn’t delivered this morning, I remembered that today is Veterans Day. We should all take a moment to appreciate, and thank all of our active duty and former military personnel for their sacrifices on our behalf.
However—a day to honor servicemen and women was grafted onto an existing day of remembrance—Armistice Day. Which was when an armistice to end WW1 hostilities was signed by Germany and the Allies on the 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month of 1918. In truth, it was just a sort of superficial gentlemen’s agreement. Fighting persisted until the Treaty of Versailles— where Germany formally surrendered—was signed the following year. But to me, the term Armistice Day sounds profound. Veteran’s Day not so much.
