  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Its Christian non-fiction, which I don't usually like :p

Anyway, so far its been talking about how Christianity has to keep changing and evolving. It also talks about the fact that if we read Scriptures literally it takes the life out of it (not trying to step on anyone's toes). I am only about 70 pgs into it so I can't explain much more.

I found this commentary on the book...

'With characteristic boldness, Bell dives right into the issue that sets his ministry apart from so many others: his belief that Scripture is open-ended (subject to individual interpretation) and his contentment with the mysteries therein...'

'He explains through the work of Paul that missions is "less about the transportation of God from one place to another and more about the identification of a God who is already there..."'

'Bell also discusses the meaning of salvation, noting that it is not a destination or a "ticket to somewhere else," but a reconciliation with God that is for now...'

'Though some readers may find some of Bell's conclusions startling...'

I don't find any of that (above) to be startling or even new. Some people might disagree with the "open" interpretation of scriptures. I tend to disagree with it (although I'm not sure what he means) because I think the Bible only has one correct interpretation. (For example, when Jesus opened his apostles' eyes to the scriptures, he was showing them the true meaning.) One interpretation, many applications.

It sounds interesting. Maybe I'll put it on my reading list. I think if I were to start reading a non-fiction book right now, I would be more interested in something that helps me to apply Biblical principles.
